I was just looking through the Alpha Strike quick start rules and thought maybe it's time to give this game a whirl.

If you've played, what do you think? Fun? Good for putting those large dusty collections of minis to use? Good with just 2 players, or more? Watcha got?

I've read over the rules and liked what i saw. Never played though.

I have, however, seen dozens of people on my Facebook groups sing its praises.

We played it and I liked the game. It's much faster but the feeling is different a bit. I can't remember having to count expended ammo, so things like Bombardier and Crusader are suddenly siege machines and far more useful. With good pilots we also saw a lot of indirect fire and other cooperative stuff. Overheat mechanic caused sometimes pretty destructive results (my Crusader one-shotting a fresh 'Mechbuster - twice in one game). You have one attack per unit and it goes just to armour, which also means a bit of devastating hit or miss and next player goes, but the sheer number of units kinda makes up for it. Also defending one hidey-hole is far easier as you don't have to move to get defensive modifier if I recall that part correctly.

Don't mess with Turkina Z at close range. Ever Smile

I've played quite a few games. The faster, large play is more attractive to my friends.

Nonetheless, I have my own qualms with it, though I do like it overall.

Usually, I play on a large play field (3ftx6ft usually) with scattered random woods for terrain. Not much else. I've played lance on lance usually. What ends up happening for me every time is that everyone just stands on the edge of the woods and fires. Sure, a lot can be done, but overall, with free spinning and simple movement, everyone gets to the edge of the woods and shoots accordingly.

I think it would be overall more fun to play in an urban environment, I just haven't set one up yet.

I have not played with the whole roll as many dice as your primary weapon value to add more randomness to damage, but I think that would add some good flavor, but also adds a lot of time to the fast game.

Overall though, I think its great to have a faster play method and one that allows us to bring more minis on the field. I have a boatload of minis, and the ability to play with lance vs lance in an hour or company vs company in 3 hours is awesome.

Haven't tried it but it does feel too simplified though, because things like ammo etc are no longer a concern.

But yeah, if you are playing large armies, this speeds things up significantly.

Cool. Thanks for the responses. Gotta get it going either at totalcon or horhiro con once I play it a few times.
