I am vindicated as an RPGer. http://www.nationalreview.com/miller/miller200410151029.asp

John Miller of National Review has an article today in honor of D&D's 30th aniversary.

Some things just never go out of style, though they may need a facelift or two. Just look at actresses and supermodels.

Funny... that same day I was at a library book sale, and I found a copy of "Like Lambs to Slaughter" which rants about how D&D, Star Wars, He-Man, etc etc are evil and leading the nation's youth straight to hell. The book came out in 1983.... hmmm, I wonder who wins the longevity contest.

Oh, and yes, I bought the book so that other people who didn't know better wouldn't buy it and use it to stir up another grand witch hunt.

He-Man is a danger to youth? Since when? And Star Wars? Weird.

Ever since people started thinking it's wrong for you to have fun. Having fun is a sign of not being a proper citizen. Besides, if they're not having fun then others shouldn't have fun either.

Anything that refers to a power other than God... He-Man "I have the Power!", Star Wars has the Force, etc etc.

Gee, I watched He-Man as a child, and I'm ok (judging by the fact that I am an active member of my church). I love Star Wars movies like crazy; in fact, I usually use it to explain certain parts of church doctrine... need I go on?

StarRaven, back in the day, the right wing constabulary didn't want any pretending done by the youth of America..... It might make them more creative, self-assured or, should I even say it, Smarter...

And we wouldn't want that.....

Maybe I'm good at Jedi Mind Tricks, because they haven't burned me at the stake yet

Yet, being the operative word....

There is a fine line between heresy and hearsay....

I'll do you one better: Using Monty Python's Life of Bryan to demonstrate church doctrine.

And I'm a right-wing fundamentalist, born-again, dyed-in-the-wool, buckle-of-the-bible-belt, evangelical baptist. Talk about taking your life in your hands.

On a more serious note, the people who object so strenuously to most fantasy (think Harry Potter most recently) are social reactionaries, not social conservatives, and certainly not religious conservatives. They don't want to preserve a society they view as good, they want to prevent change. There's a difference. Social conservative want to preserve what they view as good about their society and culture, religous conservatives want to return their church and (hopefully) world back to orthodoxy (lowercase because I am not refering to the Greek Orthodox church). Islamic fudamentalists: reactionaries. Orthodox Jews: conservatives.
Catholics: run the gammot.
