I think the problem is the Epic scale versus the large or big scale. Stackpole wrote Epic scale. This was story line universe altering immediate impact stuff. Large scale would be the Heir to the Dragon, Wolves on the Border, Or which ever book the GDL form the Star League Core. Some very high level persons were involved and the direction BattleTech was affected. But it may take a little time for the affects to manifest itself or all that happened was a power shift. Epic books are required to really shake things up or make sudden impact and change. Problem is FASA let Stackpole write to many Epics in short order and have to much say. The books needed to be on the Large scale or occasional medium scale; Avanti's Avengers or Star Lord fit into that. This fills in the universe and gives it some feel. Plus this constant upheaval gets old. Every roller coaster needs some flat spots to pick up speed and allow the thrill to set in.

The books is what gave character to the history and socio-politico-economic setups that were in the House books. The game could exist outside of that and they do. This is one of the major divisions in Btechers, to fluff or not to fluff. I think history is a major fluff add on and I like it. Others care not as long as they can rock and roll and waste other mechs. The numbers and mechanics are all that matter. Btech can live on in that manner but it becomes stagnate and dies. Many far superior gaming systems in terms of mechanics have died off because there was no or not enough fluff.

So is this the end if Btech. I do not know. the 60 year limit will definitely end epic books, less that crap Stakpole wrote to usher in MW:DA. So it can live on. I think it is time for another Shrapnel book to add flavor back to Btech.

AWAD- Off the soap box.

Shrapnel, yes, I'm a big fan. More of these would be very kewl. There's a ton of great art out there waiting for a good short story to be told about it ,and it would be in game material format rather than a book, which FanPro could release themselves. Perhaps they could do the stories with Fan Fiction?

I, personally, like reading the novels. I believe they add more depth into the BT universe. The novels part of what got me into playing the game as well. That and the cool mini's.

As far as the source books go, they generally only give a brief overview and some minor side information within the realm of BT. I would much rather read one of the novels to know what's going on instead and only refer to the source books for actual game info and tech. Such as trying to look up the actual stat info for RAC's if you don't have the new BMR for instance

Shadowking, that is basically what I have been saying. Too much depth will be taken out of BT when the books are gone. It will be alot harder to learn about new mechs and vehicles and also alot more expensive. Since I dont have all the money for source books I guess I just keep coming here and asking questions, seeing how you guys seem to know everything.

The Battletech novels are not going away. They will for the most part take place in the MW:DA time-line, but they're not going away.

As a matter of fact the first two novels have already been announced.

The Future has been declared, we're just along for the ride.

One must remember that Dark Age is the future of CBT. Much like the succession wars or the Clan invasion, it is just the next sequence in the timeline. Even if there wasn't a new click-tech game to support it, from what I have read it is how things were going to progress.

So whether you embrace the new click game or not, embrace the new novels for they are the future of the CBT universe.
