Soap Box time.
I am wondering what the President is thinking when he stateda need for less reliance on foriegn energy and an economic stimulus package.
One thing that occured to me was the old 1970's report about solar power satellites. The space program and aerospace industry would get a boost helping with the economy. Technology would be developed in the course of the program to help us with a lot of problems. There would be bunches of new jobs created. We would become immune to the "Dinosaur Asteroid" or "Neuclear War" scenarios. Heck, the ABM system could probably be piggy backed in the funding.
It would probably quiet down the environmentalists, since drilling oil up north might not be needed. The Trekkies would be happy with a space program to wonder over. It would even serve as a distraction to nosy journalists who are all looking for angle on the 911 war.
The economics stimulus package and airline bailouts have already cost almost 100 billion, the tax cuts similar. I would gladly skip the tax cut for a space program that would provide clean energy, advanced technology, jobs, and a way to ensure we do not incinerate ourselves or get stoned like the dinosaurs.

The interesting things about the garbage Bush is taking about his energy policy..
1) During the Clinton years we did not have one. His last two years in office, he tapped the strategic reserves to meet a bit of an energy crunch over the summer months. That is supposed to be a last resort type thing to do.
2) The environmentalists (Oddly I consider myself a bit of one) are all up in arms because his focus is on fossil fuels. Back in the mid 70s, there was a huge push to get alternative fuels up and running. After years of research, and millions (if not billions) spent, the companies doing the looking decided that to make alternative fuels feasable, gasoline would need to cost in the $5 a gallon range. I am not sure this has changed alot, expect to add inflation to that number.
Means when politicians tell you that we should be concentrating on alternate forms of energy, they are looking to get a sound bite, not a real solution, and are just looking for Microphone time to put down something that they probably have no better solution for.
3) California pretty much deserves what they got. Over the last 10 or so years, they have voted down every powerplant that was proposed in their state. At the same time, they have allowed unrestrained growth of the industries in the state, and strictly regulated power prices. Their attempt at "deregulation" was a farce because they strictly set the prices they would pay for any outside power. The height of hypocrisy was when the Governor of California wanted the Federal Government to force outside States to sell California their extra energy at California prices.

I'm for more nuclear power plants.
Technology has come a very long way since the last one was built in the US in the early 80's, and I think they are the best value for our money.

Nuclear plants in Europe recycle their waste and use it several more times before it must be discarded resulting in a significantly amount less of waste matter--in the neighborhood of 80% less.
And seeing as over 75% of all radio-active waste is not!!!! generated by nuclear power plants your point to moot anyway.
