I remember the first time I found a cheater. It was in my first tournament event. We were playing 1-on-1 3025 duels single elimination starting with a light mech round, medium round, up to assault round free for all last man standing.
In the light round my choice Valkyrie was laughed at by a Jenner, I won  .
In the medium round I had a Vindicator against this 13 or so year old kid with a Hunchback. ( I was around 22, 23). There were weather conditions you could get stuck with randomly and we did, with a targeting penalty.
I lost on the basis of one single turn in which I barely missed and the kid barely rolled a hit with his AC/20 at long range. Only after I was watching my friends in the heavy round did it hit me. I was taking the targeting penalties for every shot and that kid had not! If he had there was no way he could have hit me at long range with that AC/20 (we had even gunners). And when I looked over at the little brat the smirk on his face as he looked back at me from another table made it clear.
I mentioned it to the judges, but since the heavy round was almost done by then and I had no witness, just me, there was nothing to do about it.
However I soon learned from others that this brat had done something in every round that left his opponent feeling pissed off at him and had been caught fudging his rolls by a more alert player than I. Even so, he made it to the assault free-for-all final round. Of course by then the other four people (all in their 20s) were laying for that little brat.
He chose an Awesome, everybody else picked an Atlas. And they rolled the same bad weather bad for targeting that I had gotten when the brat cheated!
Needless to say he tried to fix his hit numbers again, but four Atlases were calculating every roll he tried to make.
It is indeed a beautiful thing to see four adult guys stand up and solomely swear that no Atlas shall fire on another Atlas until the munchkin is dead, shake hands, and ATTACK FROM EVERY CORNER OF THE MAP until every last armor and internal point that brat had on his mech was destroyed.
Then, like true gentlemen, the Atlases returned to their corners and jousted until only one was left (my buddy Joe).
Although I never ran in to that kid again. I later heard how he showed up at two other group events or tournaments later on that year and everybody still remembered him. And everybody made sure to shot his mech into slag before they fired on each other.
Oh, yeah. I have an interesting side note now that I think of it. Back then (early 90s) I recall that "munchkins" were Battletech players who were not old to drive yet, while those who were old enough to have a drivers license were called "players".

I remember once when I was 15 and I was brand new to BattleTech I still didn't understand how criticals and heat worked (it was my second week of gaming!)
So I went to a BattleTech game at this local game store and I sat down and was like "Hi! I'm brand new!" and I was playing a Phoenix Hawk, it was a 3025 game.
So we're playing along me blissfully unaware of heat rules when someone is like, "Are you tracking your heat?" and i'm like "What?" because, if you remember the 3rd addition rules heat was not part of the basics!!
So I end up just saying that my machine gun ammo blew sky high and withdrew from the game in embaresment, but they let me play the next game. Another player who had been knocked out earlier pulled me aside and we played some one on ones and he introduced me to the advanced rules. But it was damn funny.
Hawks can get damn toasty if you jump max distance and fire all your energy weapons.

The big difference Raven is that you were new and didn't know the rules, while this kid was cheating.
And I always ask my opponent when he needs to roll to hit before he rolls, and if it doesn't seem right I'll ask him to tell me how he arrived at that number.

I hadn't really thought of it in this way before, but on the few occasions when I can actually get a game together these days I do something simular to what Awad does.
I used to use small dice, the same size dice that come with the boxed sets. Actually I used to use those very same dice, they were magic and very often gave me the head shot or CT crit I needed. I still kick myself for losing half of them during a move and breaking the spell forever 
But anyway I was saying I used to use small dice, now I use larger ones (monopoly size) with good easy to see pips so that the other players can more easily see what I rolled from across the table and vice versa without having to squint at them too hard. I had not thought of this as a cheat preventer trick but it could serve well as such.

Here's a funny story about rolling dice...
It happened at TotalCon back a couple years ago. There were 12 of us around a table playing and one player who'd get up from his chair a few feet away to move. When it came time for him to fire he got ready to roll right where he was sitting.
The target (player 'A') says to me as the GM something like "are you really going to let him roll where no one can see him?" I told him "don't worry about it, just play". I could tell he was very uncomfortable with that ruling. Tactically the battle changed quickly and 'A' and that "sitting player" did not engage each other for almost 2 hours, with each shooting at different targets.
When they ended up in range with each other 'A' demanded that the "sitting player" get up and roll on the table we were all at. So he got up & walked over to the table and promptly hit with every weapon, destroying "A's" fairly undamaged mech.
It was then a team mate pointed out to A that the "sitting player" had only hit with 2 medium lasers in 3 hours while sitting in his chair, but had hit with everything when he came over to the table. The sitting player then went on to kill several more mechs in the hour that remained to swing the battle to the defenders.
The moral of that story? Well, not sure there is one, but it's damn funny.
BTW, the sitting player was Mordel

dude we have a guy like that named marco ( bald loud fat f--k who cheats and everybody here in town knows it. we basically kicked him out of battletech and now he cheats at warhammer40k which is fine by me since i don't play the game. now they are finding out what kind of a player he really is

What's the point of cheating in a game played for fun? Now maybe if we were playing for money... say a dollar a point for armor and ten a point for IS... in which case I could probably afford to play a toad.
