What a sad story. I remember going to two Whaler's games in the '80s. We sat in the first row behind the net, right next to the goal judge. Every slapshot that missed the net high came right at our heads and me and Tom would duck, as it hit the glass. The regulars who sat behind us would laugh every time. I was kind of glad my reflexes would kick in.
I feel so bad for the player also. I remember Reed Larson (slapshot clocked at 100mph) injured a young girl in the crowd and it messed him up for a while.
