I wonder how foreigners coming to the olympics are going to feel? The ones that were here for Placid, LA, and Atlanta are going to notice a serious difference aren't they. They are probably going to be upset by the suspicion of every foreigner, and the general didtrust of strangers that is definately going to come thru loud and clear.
It has already cropped up a couple times in the Casino. No one is tolerating any arrogance from the arab types anymore. a lot of them come across that way without intending to. I have had to referee several times. Several folks have found them asked to leave the pit due to some issues that are normally overlooked.
It all reminds me of what Guliani did with that donation in new york. There are some definate basic cultural issues, and since 911 most people are far less tolerant of some of those clashes. I wonder how many security incidents are going to be caused by someone saying the wrong thing, or acting acorrding to a certain "behavior profile".
I am glad that this one is in Utah/ Salt Lake. The Mormon culture tends toward a lot of self discipline and restraint. I would hate to see what would happen in L.A. or one of the other, looser cities.

Speaking of intolerance, let's chat about the International Olympic Committee getting their shorts in a knot over the US team wanting to march in the opening ceremonies with a 9/11 World Trade Center flag at the head of the column.
The IOC said it would make the games too political. Like the US not participating to protest the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan wasn't political. Or 4 years later the Soviets not participating to protest the US invading Grenada wasn't political.
My opinion? A big red-white-and-blue, star spangled kiss my *ss to the IOC.
But hey, it's just my opinion.

I am just waiting for a gold medal winner to request the 911 flag to be the one raised for their ceremony. That could get interesting?
Security is tighter than a gnats waste hole tho'. An employee just got fired, he forgot his pocket knife was in a backpack. NBC just mentioned it in passing.

It was great to see other countries carrying the USA flag along with their own country's. It goes to show you that our allies are standing by us on this one.

Athletes do not choose to have what flag they want to be flown--so that can't happen.
Plus I heard the flag won't survive being hung so they aren't going to hang it again.

Yeah, I liked the french team's idea. One side american, the other theirs. _________________ Duct tape is like the force. It has a light side & a dark side, and strings also lie under it all.

I don't have much opinion on the French either. They are as bad as we are egotistically, with less justification. I just liked the concept with the flags. _________________ Duct tape is like the force. It has a light side & a dark side, and strings also lie under it all.

I have NO opinion of the French.
I'ts an inside joke between Mordel, I and a few others. Someday when I have an opinion of the French I'll tell the story.

After what the French Judge did to the Canadian Figure Skating Doubles team last night, I would think that opinions would change for some people.
Me? I've never liked the French. And last night is just another example of why.

I just caught it on my Tivo. I replayed it 4 times to see if I was imagining things. The scores might also be biased regionally. The eastern bloc all rated the russians higher. There was no real problem with vote fixing until the Ice Dancing became a part of the olympics. Maybe that even should be dropped? Ice Dancing I never followed, but I have heard the news. The deal with the russian judge was over Ice Dancing. I feel sorry for the French Ice Dancers. If I were them I would force a review by withdrawing from the competition due to Integrity of the judges issues. (how can they know for sure that they are the best, now?)
Maybe the judges should arrive separately, no pre-event conference, and separated enough to discourage talking asside from what is needed for judging? This is the second olympics that I have heard a lot forom the media. I have been watching figure skating for years (I have dim memories of Hamill) and am an educated fan.I have heard roumors of "block" voting, but no proof, until now. While I was growing up, the family would play the "guees the score" game around the TV. We matched pretty close with the real judges most times, last night I dissagreed by better than .3 points. The ordinals were out of line too.

I've enjoyed a lot of the Olymics so far.
My one issue though is: getting a gold medal for riding down a half pipe and doing 3 spinning "tricks" vs. flying down an icy mountain trail between flags at 70 mph.
Why isn't everybody snowboarding? I thoght a gold medal used to represent something?

What about the Freestyle Skiing then? I look at Snowboard and Freestyle as equivalent. Snowboarding is growing like skiing was, after ww2. The Olympics have to have some currency, or loose their relevance. I would agree that the various committees must be careful not to add "fad" sports to their list. The sports should include a fair amount of physical effort and skill. Bungee Jumping would be out for example, any fool can damgle at the end of a rope.(heck a lot of crooks have done so, I don't think they were rated for "form") _________________ Duct tape is like the force. It's things like that that keep me from watching the Olympics... plus, it's usually pretty boring
