That was going to be my suggestion. If left in a bad spot, copy the main stats and play that character as an npc until you can gracefully bow that character out. Unless of course the person playing that character leaves in a bad way then you get to do all sorts of fun stuff . A pulled hamstring, sore toe, what ever it takes.
Here is another question. Do you want this character to be able to get back into the game at some point in the future? If you do then a secondary mission profile might be best. Just send that char. of to TImbuktoo and beyond until the next break when they will be able to return to play.

You a couple of options. One is to kill off the Character. If the person can't come back for a long time, you could use this.
Another is an Sickness. The Character could get very Ill. You make a story arc about getting him to a healer. If they still aren't back you could always leave them there to recuperate.
You could use him a an NPC. I do this only when I have to. I usually have a spirit Possess him and he can help the party as needed and not much of anything else. I've done this to aid a party answer a riddle which they didn't have any reference to. As in learning from history...

My favorite, you all prisoners of XYZ, will be killed tomorrow, but escape and found out of some larger greater plan and must stop it. Works great in fantasy and throws a curve ball at the PCs, plus a quick start game since they do not need starting equipment.
In many games you have a lead guy and they go from there. But that is why some groups do not work. How can a Pali and Drow Assassin be in the same party??? Not going to happen if they role play in character.
As a GM I have thrown players out, one bad apple or just bad fit and ruin it for everyone and then no one plays. At the same time you need to run roughshod over player generation. Some players get pissed at me, but no former Demi Precentor suddenly joins a merc unit. A former low level foot solider, yeah, with pluses and minuses.
Another idea I have done is all players are from the same noble household. Note they do not have to be nobility but retainers, loyal followers, advisors. It works the same in Btech but is a corporation or a lesser noble of a house.
When Btech players get whacked, easy they hire new people. Need to replace the dead guy. So are they from Galatea, or a farm boy with promise, or the vet that can not get away from war? Final idea is they take over an NPC and make it a PC. Easy transition and suddenly one of those paper people has personality.
Kind of all over the place but it works.
AWAD- So there you all are in a wagon with bars, in your skivvies......

Ill have to remember that one, AWAD. That sounds like it could be a good lead in for just about any game system.
I already have something in mind in case the entire group gets wiped out. Anyone else ever see the Red Dwarf episode "Back to Reality"?
For those of you who havent... While exploring a planet, the Starbug gets destroyed by a Despair Squid, and the entire crew is killed. Only to wake up in a Total Immersion gameroom. They had just gotten done playing the new TI game 'Red Dwarf'. Pretty much, they all learn that they are actually a person they hate. Lister (who is a flaky but nice guy) find out that he is realy a heartless death squad leader in a totalitarian regeme. If you get a chance to see it, watch it. Its good.

AWAD, Been there, done that....
Also, when do players really roleplay their characters in the begining? Usually it takes a few sessions to get into the character... As to the Pali and the Drow. Illusions work wonderful to facilitate this...
It also works when you have someone carry a bunny around with them for no reason. They never seem to mind and they never eat it...

I actually played a game that started off similr to that. The whole team is transported to place x. When arriving the metal detector accidentally zaps every article of clothing but leaves most characters with their personal items. So my barbarian character shows up with his helm, axe, and chainmail shirt and nothing else. It makes for some interesting role playing. Some characters dive for the bathroom, some don't notice. Since my char had the least cash on hand I was left with stealing a towel from the mens room and wearing it as a kilt to the first battle. Too me the image of Conan in a pink fuzzy towel is hilarious.
But then again this is also a group that included an animated spam loaf.

Speaking of towels, I make sure that each of my charachters, no matter what game system, always carry a towel. Modesty is just one reason. For the other reasons, read The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.
Carrying around a bunny I can kind of see, I mean bunnies can be dangerous, if youve seen Monty Python and the Holy Grail, you know what I mean. But an animated Spam loaf? Why would you endnager the world with that kind of evil?

Well, there was drinking involved when creating the characters. Not to worry though, one of the character attributes for my barbarian is the ability to eat and drink anything. So the next session when the player of the spam loaf was not present, I ate it. Which answers one of the previous questions about how to get a character out of the game, Just have something eat them. hehe

yup, Oafman, that ones a good standby. I like to have the story 'he gave himself for the group' ready to go. "Then the dragon attacked.... The orcs swarmed out of nowhere..... He touched the wrong lever..... Cause I said so...." Okay, maybe that last one doesnt go over so well, but you get the idea.

I have played several characters that I designed for ease of play. One of my favorites was in the DC Heroes system. He was a lumberjack who thought he was Paul Bunyan and had a pet bear who he called Babe (as in the blue ox.) The part that was the most fun to play was that the bear was smarter than he was. So if I had a lapse in judgement and had the character do something really stupid, I could have the bear save his butt and provide jester like entertainment to the GM.
