The weapons should do more damage at short range, espically energy weapons. And the difference shouldnt be huge. Like a IS PPC would do 12/10/8 depending on range. Gauss rifle would do 18/15/12 (or 19/15/11 if you want to miss the head clips)

Sorry guys, I don't think the solution to the problem is to add variable damage. That's one more statistic to bog the game down. Plus I like that there are some powerful weapons out there.
Just take away the instant death that comes with destroying the head. It can still be a vulnerable location, but it doesn't have to put the mech out of the competition. Place the cockpit in the CT and call the "head" the grouping of advanced sensors. So if the head gets taken out the mech is not lost, it just recieves a +4 to fire, or some other drawback.

I disagree, my damage rules use variable damage and the game isn't bog down, in fact I think it plays slightly faster because less time is spent in crossing off armor circles.
And it solves all the problems we have with the current system, such as this. _________________ Memento audare semper

Except at the Austin monte Diablo. (30. That has to be some sort of record for a tourney.)

Vampire, now you're just being silly. Maybe you're system works so fast for you because you invented it.

Actually not. It's just a matter of getting familiarized with the rules. I have memorized Battletech rules, and I don't need to check the charts and tables for dice results.
On the other hand, though I may have invented it, I still have to take a look at my rules occassionally, and I can assure you the game plays faster. And my playtesters are witness to this.
*shrug* It works for me, and I think is good enough to share. Why don't you try it?

I just can't believe that all mech designs don't have 9 pnts on their head! The engineers of those designs should be rounded up and shot. _________________ "I have lived my life trying to be a virtuous man. There isnt much use for 9 pts on the head sometimes. 10 pts will get a crit roll, after that anything will kill you. 15 pts will take the head off. There are no 11 pt weapons. Missiles htting the head in those point means your probably anyway.

Which means that 8 armor is all you really need...but I do like having that ninth point.

Let me put it this way- the odds of what happened at the Austin Monte Diablo ever happening again are .1*10^-29
And most of the fire that we sent to the heads was light weapons such as missiles and LB-X rounds.

Well, when you've played this game for as long as I have and you've been dinked by an lbx cluster , it's nice to have the nine to survive that AC10/PPC.
and when you've been dinked by the LRM (edited) from that T-Bolt it helps your confidence to know you can still survive it's Large Laser
There is no reason you can give to convince me not to strip some armor off ANYWHERE to make sure to have 9 on your head. These Mech pilots are more valuable than the machines they pilot and should absolutely be protected to the utmost.
I reapeat, the idiots who put 7 on the PHawk and such should be flogged.
