The warships and such already use large surface areas to dissipate heat. You might have a way of minimizing damage from copying the Valve idea, but I wouldn't allow it for Dropboats or larger. Aerofighters, maybe.

I like it.
And the additional Crit slots, if you go that route, should only be in the 8 places you listed. The one head slot should remain open. Just my 2 cents

a little unbalancing at first, but after a group gets used to it, it would be pretty cool.
