The number of jurors in a case, and the number needed to vote guilty in order for it to carry varies by state and sometimes even by the case being tried.
Incidents like the OJ case happen far less often than many people are led to belive. Usually the lawyers want to get it over with as effeciently (as in: as quickly as they can while still achieving their objective) as they can, since they often have other cases they have to work on also. Most lawyers simply cannot afford to waste time in court. And unlike Judge Ito, most judges don't allow shenannigans in their court.
As far as jury duty, I've been called 3 times, and was exempt each time for being a student. And I've almost been called to testify twice.
The American legal system isn't perfect, but it this best that I have come across in my studies (at least for a system run by mortals). All legal systems have their good and bad points, it is just a matter of finding the best blend of good points that don't create their own bad points. The culture of the local people also makes a difference. A legal system that works just fine on Centauri 5 may cause riots if applied to the residents of Sirius 3.
