The 3rd ed. Mechwarrior manuals have an elephant gun as one of the weapons a character can own.
But one of the novels had a sequence in which a person compared a Goliath to an elephant, in the process noting that elephants had been extinct for hundreds of years.
How can you have an elephant gun w/o elephants to shoot at?
Did the name just stick?

Of course. Like meny things from ancient Terra the name can be taken and reused many times over for a thing that no longer serves it's original purpose, or even resembles the original. Who knows what kind of weapon the gun actually is... (Just look at tanks. Could anyone before WWI dream of what will the word be used for?).

Just like Laser-"Rifles" wouldn't be "rifled" any more!
I can deliver more examples but in german. But i think there are a lot more in english too

I'm pretty sure that Gauss Rifle barrels aren't rifled.

Actually, it would be, but not in the traditional way. The magnets would be wound around the barrel to instill the projectile with spin...

Never thought of that but given some of the emergency alternative ammo supplies I don't know if that will work honestly. Girders spinning seems like it would screw up the barrel and I doubt they would spin easily.

The projectile wouldn't touch the barrel. It would be suspended by magnetism.
If it wasn't "rifled", then the accuracy would be about the same as a musket.

Not to mention that we have existing weapons that use a solid rod similar to a girder. The Navy has been developing a ship launched rail gun for a long time. Well, the US Navy & British Navy are/were developing it together. I'm not sure of the status on it, its been a couple years since I checked up on the project.
