Depends on how big of a drive.., CD's work well. Or maybe an External HD that you could copy it over to....Zips aren't bad for Small Drives....

Last time I used an older HD for storing the
stuff I really wanted to keep. It`s no problem that it`s a bit smaller, you won`t need backups of everything anyway. If you want it all, use Norton Ghost and a large enough HD/CD/ZIP etc.

I found it helps to have a couple of special directories on my HD at all times. One called "utilities" contains the install files etc for all my downloaded progs. The one called "updates", well...
And of course, my "RPG" dir is getting quite large too.

I may put Dual boot on my Desktop and see how it goes...Sir HEnry

Instead of the usual methods for making a dual-boot PC, you should try XFDISK, which is a free OS/2 style boot manager which doesnt need his own partition !

At http://home.pages.de/~xfdisk/ you are greeted by a english version of the page and you can download not only the english, dutch & german versions of the program, YOU GET THE SOURCE CODE TOO !

I use XFDISK since i discovered it a couple of years ago in the german computer magazin c't ( which has worked together with Byte magazine in the past ) and never had any problems because of it.

Only Windows makes problems when you install it on a HDD where you already have partitions with XFDISK. But this is just one of the many faults of Windows. Generaly it is a good idea to install Windows as the FIRST OS on you HDD before you intall the other OS. As Windows overwrites the first 17 sectors ( MasterBootRecord of your HDD ) when you install it, you have to reinstall XFDISK after each Windows installation.

Be warned: XFDISK is a tool for professionals ! Although the boot menu is easy enough to be used by ANY computer dummy, you should modify you HDD with XFDISK only if you know what you are doing.

I prefer to use at least 2 partitions with windows.
Obviously i need the C: partition for all the system stuff.
But i usually configure the programs i use with windoes to store their data and documents on partition D:.

This has the advantage that, even if partition C: is destroyed and has to be reformatted, the data in partition D: may still be save. And i only need to backup partition D: regulary. Partition C: only needds a backup after you have installed a new program.

Hope this helps, MEX

The C drive for program files and D drive for data files is a good idea, espeically if you have two seperate physical drives. Gives you protection no matter what happens save lightning taking out the whole box. This can actually speed up the system if you have a good HD controller card with some 80 pin cables.

I have the same problem. tyhere are little files called Index in the various caches and cookie directories. I find that if I delete one of them, I have to roll back my XP to when they were intact. It is majorly annoying, that I have to be careful of a couple of PERMANENT files lurking in TEPORARY CACHES. Another case of microsoft being too comfy due to its defacto monopoly.

I am waiting the day when a bunch of MAC, GEM, and UNIX fanatics form a small terror organization and stage a mass attack on the MS servers and maybe even a few ANFO trucks into HQ buildings. This would be out of frustration with a confused legal system.

I use it, and I haven't had that problem. I also haven't gotten a clean install of Speed Disk or NAV. Policies forbid it...Now how do I change Policies...XP won't let me....
