Even 3 damage is still kind of "meh" to me. Anything less than 5 is not anything I want. I say that knowing full well that SRMs do 2 points per missile, and that's one of my favorite weapons. _________________ Mordel Blacknight - Site Administrator

I like the SRM6, the SRM4 is OK, the SRM2 is a waste unless you can use inferno. _________________ www.210sportsblog.com

I agree completely here. Streak 2s are pretty cool because you can throw a lot of them on. But the regular SRM 2 is mostly a waste. SRM 4s and SRM 6s are two of my favorite weapons. _________________ Mordel Blacknight - Site Administrator

And I see the AC/5 as having several distinct advantages, still. One, precision ammo --- second, the ability to use flak ammo, and finally --- Reflective Armor or use of Blue Shield Tech. And by the time you get ballistic reinforced armor.... you are also only getting 12 points to a ton, and you are nearly at era 3145.... which means that the AC/5 is a solid dependable weapon, for how many centuries? It does 5 damage from prior to the Star League, all the way to 3145... and still only generates one heat, meaning you can always do something, even if your opponent has Plasma and Infernos.

Oh wow, that's fantastic! I'd totally missed it. And though 3145 does have a few extremely viable alternatives to the AC/5, I appreciate your sentiments. And so does the Mongrel!
Guys, I'd written a Mech of the Week article on the Wolverine over on the CGL forums. I'd referenced this thread because some truths bear repeating. _________________ "Rear armour is defeatist!" - unknown Kuritan Mechwarrior
The AC5 is a great gun!
On heat, 3025 style: A Rifleman knows no heat.

While it's easy to make them and nothing is stopping anyone, how would you like to be the one who faces the Targ/Pulse combo with enough heat sinks to fire all it's weapons till the sun goes nova? After a while the mech that builds up no heat, has no ammo worries and all the other goodies that munchkins like to add get old fast, mainly because those mechs have no weaknesses. So really what is the point of playing against a mech that requires a similar mech to beat it? I don't think fights like are fun at all.
But each to his own. |
This is an old grab, but I would argue that the mech you described was poorly designed. If it has enough heat sinks to fire all its weapons then it has too many heatsinks and not enough weapons. The mech you described is very unbalanced, but if you want to make it a munchkin mech, give it a jump of at least 5, and enough weapons to heat up to 14ish if it decides to fire everything.. All lasers. That is a munchkin mech. _________________ "My Blood is not mine to give, it belongs to my Brothers"

As for the AC5, it can be a decent weapon depending on the mech around it. If you can create a sniper... fast mover that can take advantage of the terrain, it can be a useful weapon, but it will take forever to kill most anything with it. The problem is with the weight of the weapon, it tends to limit you to a medium mover (5-8-5 ish). It isn't as useful if the other mech has you on speed.
As an example, I'll take a Pheonix Hawk against a Shadow Hawk, or even a Wolverine, and pretty much ignore the AC5 during the fight. _________________ "My Blood is not mine to give, it belongs to my Brothers"

Excellent points. I think TC/Pulse combos are kind of munchy, but there are ways to counter it. Your point about a 'Mech that does not overheat not being munchy is valid. Because as you stated, a 'Mech like that usually packs less firepower then one that does overheat and is run by an experienced pilot.
