I was wondering what might happen if someone was to put a "horror" element into the game series.

You play a Blakist mech jock during the opening days of the Jihad. Much of the planetary garrison defected to your side during the invasion, and so pacifying the planet (your first few missions) is surprisingly easy.

This changes drastically when you get sent out to locate the members of a mech patrol that got separated during a storm, with two of the mechs simply becoming non-responsive to radio requests. You find four of the six mechs in the patrol, and what appear to be heavy vehicle tracks leading away from where the last two mechs should have been... and definite signs of a battle. When you follow the tracks, you see - you don't detect it on your scanners, but you see - a Wolverine with bright red optics seemingly emerge out of a bolt of lightning. As proof that you're not simply seeing things, the mech uses its Clan ER PPC (which it has in lieu of an AC/5) to start sniping the four mechs you've located. The pilot uses a Kai Allard-style "run and gun" technique, leaving him just one step ahead of you as you pursue him... and allowing him to (in an irritatingly pleasant voice) taunt you and raise questions as to how the patrol got separated in the first place.

Your CO responds to this by initiating a massive campaign to ferret out any remaining resistance cells, but the campaign ends badly. The mystery Wolverine head-shots the mechs belonging to the CO and 2IC of the planetary garrison, killing them in one shot each. The Blakist XO, meanwhile, voluntarily leaps to her death while praying in vain to Jerome Blake for deliverance rather than let herself be captured after he blows her mech's gyro. You, meanwhile, find yourself stuck having to save your fellows from ambushes and booby traps, leaving you on the far side of the battlefield and so unable to save anyone.

Morale plummets among the Blakist and traitor forces, such that desertions and defections begin. When you are sent to eliminate one such group of deserters, you once more face the Wolverine. At this point, the pilot gives you an ultimatum: join him, lay down your arms & leave, or perish like all of those who refuse his call.

If you join him, you must prove your change of heart by dropping your superior officer's mech. You then spend the rest of the game under the command of an officer who you don't think is even human.

If you show any display of resistance, he'll fight you so as to allow the remaining defectors a chance to run. You must now figure out who and what this guy is so that you can hopefully counter him.

Or you could eject and get a non-standard "game over" in which you're shown hiding out among the locals.

Thoughts?

I like it. Has a very creepy vibe.

I don't know, two head shots? Sounds a lot like the season finale of The Walking Dead when Hershel and his shotgun were blowing off zombie heads from quite a distance and he never missed. Which in turn reminded me of Call of Duty and insta-kill.

I'd love to see BattleTech set in a universe where the zombie apocalypse has taken over and is spreading across worlds.

What you eventually find out about the guy (when and how varies by the choice you make) is that he was the planetary garrison's most elite commando, and was actually the #5 man in the rank structure.

Much of the game would be spent trying to figure out if he's simply that good or if he's not human.

**

Proposed endings:

No matter which path you take - Blakist or resistance - the final battle takes place at the Blakist headquarters, with the shattered command staff and their bodyguards trying to stop the resistance from destroying or capturing the last Blakist dropship before it can launch and summon reinforcements.

Blakist:

The final battle comes down to you and him.

If you lose, your mech will go down and explode. You will be saved by the pilot, who notes that you're perhaps the last Blakist officer left on the planet and so someone has to keep you alive so that you can accept the terms of surrender.

If you win, then at the last minute you'll be distracted by a radio broadcast from the last surviving comms post. By the time you get back to checking on the downed mech, you'll realize that the cockpit is empty... and that the pilot is on his way to the tarmac with an LRM launcher. He'll fire the missile off at the last load of fuel being pumped into the ship, causing the ship to explode in the chain reaction. You may have downed the Wolverine, but now you're stuck on the planet with its pilot and the rest of the resistance... and with no back-up coming.

Resistance:

You're spearheading the assault against the facility.

If you go down before you accomplish so many objectives, it's a general "game over" and you go back to the mission launch screen.

If you go down after you accomplish so many objectives, the pilot will step in to finish the job.

If you take out your former CO and capture or destroy the ship, then the victory shot will show the optics on your mech slowly turning red...
