I designed a 2 megaton bb that averages 90 points of capitol damage in all arcs, 150pts regular damage for fighter defense. The move is 4/6 and has 600 points of armor average. I also fit on 5 docking points and fit on 30 aerospace with an armored marine company for ships troops. I was left with 110,000 tons of cargo.

This looks WRONG when I compare it with 2750, 3057 and some of the Field Manuals. How far off am I? Are the SL designs THAT lame?!

I am not giving specifics, because I want to see if someone else can duplicate my results, maybe by a different method.

Last time I played with spaceship design I tried a carrier. If I remember correctely it was just silly. 200 Aerospace fighters 15 collars, and I think 48 NPPC's per side and then some 150,000+ tons of cargo aera. I was 2 million tons but moved at 35 I think. Ill have to look for the design again. If anyone knows of a freewear version of a jumpship creator let me know I want to try the design again in a semi-offical version.

Heavy Metal Aero is the only program I know of which tried to tackle the warship creation process mess.

What technology base did you use, clan?

The SL era ships are lame, espeically in the armor and point defense weapons. Most would be halfway decent ships if someone worked on that. Anyone know why they are so bad? Too much SI? Too much cargo?

A long while back I messed around with a series of new ships. Fluff wise there were supposed to be new Jade Falcon ships armed primarily with PPCs that fired jade green bolts intead of white-blue. It was supposed to be superior and new technology, though I was using the same stats as any other navel class PPC. The ships were nasty, something along the lines that you described.

Okay, I thought that I was doing something majorly wrong during the design process. I looked at the NightLord and figured I would design something to beat it. I was surprised when I could come up with something that could outclass it in all respects. If you are going to design a boogieman type ship, or mech, you should be serious about it.

Yep, SL era ships suck a great deal, in no small part due to the fact that the space combat system and the ship creation rules have changed several times, and because they had considerably less experience with min/maxing designs.

Some flaws are rather blatant though. Vincent, the Soyuz and the Liberator are good examples of rather obvious flaws.

Part of it is poor design, part of it is not giving enough armor. The above 3 ships would get a lot better if you really beef up their armor.

IMHO, the SL's design philosophy was aimed towards specialization on every front. Capital ships were built to transport stuff for their taskforce and ground units (hence the huge cargoholds while the combat dropships and Mech/vehicle/infantry carriers have very small cargoholds)
and fight other capital ships. You had aerospace fighters and DropShips to take care of an enemy's fighters, a Battleship would normally not have to concern itself with that.
You had dedicated fighter carriers, so you didn't need mroe then some limited escorts on vessels designed to duke it out with other cap ships.
In a 'modern' setting, a WarShip is often on its own, and it needs to be able to handle any threat.

Why the Clans never bothered to add point defense to some of their old ships (while newer ships like the York, Nightlord, Conqueror and Leviathan don't have these problems) escapes me. Surely their Trails, when they used a WarShip, often included Aerospace fighters?

At any rate, when it comes to ship design, I think its more fair to compare the stats of say the Avalon and Leviathan II to anything you make, if you wish to compare your creations to good fluff designs.

It wasnt a boggey man that I designed. I took a 2million ton design and started going to town. I added so much stuff I had 3 rule book pages of adding. I was designing it for a campaign and it was right out of the design book. Honestely it could take on all of the designs and trash them all, alone and with the 200 aerospace it was its own flotillia.

It was so well armed that I think I felt it was wrong and stopped working on it.

Problem is it would take a while for you to launch all of those fighters, the rules allow you to launch only two small crafts/fighters per door per turn and a maximum of 8 doors for ALL launchable bays. Ergo, you can launch 16 fighters per turn, it would take you about 12-13 turns, most space battles barely last that long.

The Trick is you can always just go ahead and have the fighters lainched before the battle Starts. It's not like fonding another warship that is comeing at you in time to be ready for the engagement would be hard.
