I find it distasteful and slam on every soldier who has ever served this country.

Since this makes fun of of 2 people that were never soldiers I don't see any reason for this to be offensive.

What specifically do you find offensive about it?

The way they chose to take We Were Soldiers style picture and trash it, second they are suggesting that not only is the book not worth reading, but also that the movie is not worth seeing.

Third, their choice of targeting the President and the VP in this manner is also a slam on the any one who has sereved in the US military. So the President and the VP never served, and this is something new?

The comment about fighting for oil HAS nothing to do with current fighting and it shows clearly that who ever put this together has no clue to where the actually fighting is going on.

The idea of making fun of our leaders and picking on them is fine...but doing it in all out bad taste and disrespecting the ones who allow them that freedom is wrong.

That is what I find wrong with it and that is what I find distasteful about it. There are better ways to get a message arcoss and have it aimed at the folks you want it aimed at without dragging others into.

HUH?!?!?! WHAT?!?!?! It's called satire. I don't have the slightest idea how any inteligent person would come to this conclusion. In fact, to get the full effect of the joke you'd really have needed to see the movie/read the book.

Third, their choice of targeting the President and the VP in this manner is also a slam on the any one who has sereved in the US military. So the President and the VP never served, and this is something new?

Nope, nothing new. This is actually the same type material that was around when Clinton was President (and for the record I posted many of those too). But why is this a slam on the military because the POTUS & VP are "targeted"? I fail to see the connection other than as POTUS he's CIC of the military, but as you mention making fun of Presidents without military service isn't new. So what's the issue?

The comment about fighting for oil HAS nothing to do with current fighting and it shows clearly that who ever put this together has no clue to where the actually fighting is going on.

You are correct in saying the current fighting has next to nothing to do with oil. But note that it is only March in the year they mention. Still has plenty of time to go after the oil--and it's obvious that's where he's headed just by listeing to him.

BTW, I don't have a huge issue with solidifying our postion in the middle east, just don't pretend that not what we're doing.

The idea of making fun of our leaders and picking on them is fine...but doing it in all out bad taste and disrespecting the ones who allow them that freedom is wrong.

I don't find anything there disrespectful to soldiers at, and based on what you're saying you've posted nothing that shows that it is disrespectful.

That is what I find wrong with it and that is what I find distasteful about it. There are better ways to get a message arcoss and have it aimed at the folks you want it aimed at without dragging others into.

As I stated above, they didn't drag anyone else into it.

I don't agree that it's a slam on the people who did the fighting, or the book or the movie. It only shows that the people who made it used the first thing that popped into their heads. It shows lack of appriciation of the freedom they have, not the people that the original picture was about.

I gave you my opinion of it, if you don't agree or see my point that is fine. The way they went about it was wrong, pointing out the President and the VP didn't serve is one thing, showing it as spoof on a movie that is about something that in a way changed the entire course of how this country sees it's service men and women is wrong, THAT is what I find offensive and distasteful.

I could careless if someone picks on the President or anyother polictian. But say we are only fighting for oil to me shows someone has no clue, last I look Afghanstan HAS NO OIL...so how can the we fighting for oil in a country that doesn't have oil depoist to start with?

This little barb would be more in line to aimed at President Bush SR. during the Gulf War, then yes it had something to do about oil...

But as I said above I gave my opinion of it and that is how I feel.

Small grin. I would think they coukld have done better. The AWOL comment is inaccurate, not everybody can be in the military. The fighting for oil comment would apply to 1990-91 not now.

I'm afraid that the joke hits the nail on the head.

Yes, this war is against terrorism, and the invasion of Afghanistan was aimed principally at destroying Al Qaida main base of operations.

However, before the 11-S, there were other interests at stake.

To tell a long story short, it's about oil, indeed, Central Asia oil and gas have to cross Afghanistan to be delivered to the Indian subcontinent.

US policy makers made the mistake of thinking that they could do business with the Taleban regime, though in this they weren't alone, as Pakistan supported the Taleban in an effort to install a satellite state in Afghanistan.

The simple truth, is that this war is just, but there's also a profit to be made from it.

As the saying goes "War is a profitable business. Invest a son!"

Several intelligence sites and newspaper aticles have pointed this out. Personally, I'm neutral on it, I can respect President Bush as CIC, but the fact that both he and his VP come from the oil industry isn't lost on me. You have to be very naive if you don't think things like that influence policy-making.

I agree with Vampire, and I would also like to note I found the pic Chihawk posted very friggin funny.

Presiden Bush and VP Cheney are both tied in to the oil industry so deeply that if the USA got rid of Oil they would both become welfare cases. The fighting right now is against Al Queda, and it is definitly important, but it will become an energy and control issue soon enough, I mean it would be crazy of us NOT to try to consolidate control of the region to secure oil and gas supplies!!

But I have to say, how does this mock the book or the movie? i haven't read or seen either one of them (though I plan to, i'm just tooo poor to even get a hair cut right now!), but as this is aimed at the President, I fail to see how it insults soldiers.

If you wanted to insult the soldiers of Vietnam, then you could say something like "Fighting for France's Interest since the First World War: We Were Thugs." Or something like that, which would be insulting to soldiers, not what that said.

I do find it funny that when Bush puts out an energy policy.. The first we have had in 8 years.. He is knocked by the left as being in the pockets of the oil producers.. People have very short memories..

Mid 70s we had an oil crisus, and there was a BIG push to find alternative energy sources. We spent alot of money exploring different options, and the generic answer turned out to be that alternative sources of energy started to become economically feasable when oil sold for around $5 a gallon.

That was in the mid 70s.. add in inflation and how much are those alternative energy sources gonna cost us now? Think this country could handle that drastic a change in its energy prices in that short a time?

History is fascinating. Unfortunately people forget and only remember what they want to remember.

that little spat with Iraq was not only for oil dude it was about the illegal invasion of a tiny little country called Kuwait.
this picture that you are upset about is nothing. it takes a jab at the presidentcy and the vice presidentcy what comedian don't do that the fact that the prez and the vice prez were not in the military has nothing to do with the military but more with poking fun at the leaders of this counrty which is all right. there is nothing wrong with that. Uh...DUDE, have you look at HOW much oil comes out of Kuwait? If not I would suggest you look into it. Second, the invasion was illegale, BUT if Kuwait didn't have the oil do you think WE would have done anything?

China's invasion of Tibet is illegal, but I don't see us attacking them and forcing them out...Russian attacking Checyean is illegal, but I don't see us attacking them, and what about Russia's invasion of Afghanastan...nope we didn't rush in to push them out...so tell me again, beyond the oil produced by Kuwait and Saudi, what were we there for?

Desert Storm was the first war we fought that was mainly over natural resource access. Japan, our main manufacturing center, and other asian industrialised nations all use the majority of oil from this region. We get oil from mexico and venezuela, it is closer and cheaper. Japan is our prime trading partner, They have accepted responsibility for what used to be the Steel Belt and keeping on top of the pollution caused, and we agree to take care of "International Military Matters" for them. I have no doubt that there are going to be more resource wars in the future. This will drive the price per barrel over that 5$ threshold.

We have done some serious studies ranging from tapping Old Faithful (there is enough hot stuff under yellowstone to burn the butt of a dragon, and you can slant drill down into it), to putting stuff in space and messing with stellar navigation (SSPS, I posted something in off topic forum). Those programs will be dusted off, modernized and implemented. If what we did during ww2 is an indication we will blow money and lives getting it done "right now", but we will do it faster than anyone else. Those oceans and our native resources will see to it that we can do it without too much hinderance by anyone else.
