Description: Arisen From The Ashes

As the FedCom Civil War swung into high gear and conflict swepth through the Inner Sphere, the need for additional war materials was paramount. However, unlike many companies which produced new, but expensive, BattleMechs, a new upstart company, Vicore Industries, took a different route. By taking centuries old machines and upgrading both their physical as well as technological capabilities, Vicore almost single handedly started a revolution that provided a cheap means to bring 'new' BattleMechs to the field commanders desperate for more assets.

Classic BattleTech Technical Readout: Project Phoenix provides descriptions, game statistics and illustrations for twenty-nine classic BattleMechs that have been upgraded both in appearance and technology. Also, for the first time in any technical readout, additional illustrations representing all the variants for every design are also included.

Comment: There are a few new designs in this, thats true, but the ones that are being rehashed should probably have been put out to pasture.
Some designs, like the Scorpion, never really struck me as being worht the time and money to revamp, while others, im sure, have been done a thousand times by a thousand players. The only difference is that these are the 'official' versions of something that almost everyone has come up with.
The artwork for the majority of these is just hideous. I can understand that after litigations and stuff, that some of the mechs needed to be redrawn. But come on, people, THAT is not a Marauder. I cant say for certain what it is, but it aint a MAD....not by a damn sight.

....did I mention it had some designs in it?

Comment: Well, it was I who started the thread on Mordel's board that ultimately got TPTB to create this volume (entitled "Too cool!" - you can search the forum). No, the idea did NOT come from me - I'm not sure whether to be regretful or happy because of that.

I originally was against the whole idea? Why? I never got involved in the whole universe-technicalities, or even the real life legalities. No, one simple reason: the Longbow as redrawn in TRO:3058 sucked. Real bad.

Is it ironic that the Longbow, redrawn a second time in this volume, is one of the best looking ones?

The problem with this one is not its tiny size, but rather the art conception. In trying to be true to the spirit of the 'mechs, yet make them look different, most of them ended up looking really dopey. Not that the quality of the art is bad, it isn't. The designs themselves are mostly monsters!

There are exceptions, of course. The Longbow, Locust, Thunderbolt and Battlemaster all look very decent. So does the Rifleman IIC. A very, very strange thing was that the Marauder IIC looked pretty bad, but the model ended up looking quite similar to an old-school Marauder!

Oh, I'm just rambling. This is a great potential that ended not fulfilling expectations. A very curious volume, well worth acquiring second hand for 'museum' purposes!

Comment: I loved the designs in the readout for the most part. A few of the RL variants never should have seen the light of day. It is also way too short compared to the other TRO's. They probably should have put vehicles in here to thicken it up.

Comment: Its got good ideas and some of the improvements in this would be nice additions to the other TRO's. However, the whole TRO series is in need of renovation. Rather than revision. Nice to see the unseens back, albeit in slightly different forms. A bit short though.
