Description: Dispossessed in the battle of Tukayyid, former Com Guard soldier Jeremiah Rose wants nothing more than to strike back at the Clans who destroyed his `Mech and his career. Dreams of swift vengeance turn to nightmares when every effort he makes to rejoin the fight to protect the citizens of the Inner Sphere is rejected.

Forced to win a new BattleMech by fighting on the game world of Solaris VII, Rose recruits other soldiers from the arenas to create a new mercenary unit and take his grudge back to the invaders.

Unfortunately, Rose is long on battle experience and desperately short on business skill. Turning a band of mismatched MechWarriors into an elite fighting unit becomes harder than he imagined when Rose is forced to fight his fellow MechWarriors in order to fight the Clans.

Comment: I gave this novel a 4.0 for a number of reasons. First, it gives an excellent account of horrors and absolute destruction of the battle of Tuyyakid (sic). The recollection of these events by the main character allowed the reader to not only become an observer to these battles, but also created empathy toward Mr. Rose. Second reason, is the actual plot to the story. I found that the author was able to capture the Post-Clan Invasion period quite well (or at least how I would imagine it to be). The duel with Wolf's Dragoons was an interesting side story, but not really necessary. Thirdly, the actual combat experienced by the Thorns was well written. For the most part, I was able to follow the action with building excitement. A good writer should be able to put the reader in the cockpit and allow him/her to see, hear and feel the action. A good example is the death of the Stinger (I think), piloted by Mr. Rose's cousin. The brutal finality of his death was well captured Overall, this sense of being in the action was achieved for the most part, although at a few points the reader had to take a leap of faith.

The real problem I have is with the end result, the large haul of Clan mechs and technology. In my opinion, this was a far too convenient ending to the story. (a bad case of the fluff). I feel that the end could have been handled a little better. So many good novels lose it in the last couple of chapters as the writer hurries to finish.

This however, does not take away from the fact that generally, this is one of the better Battletech books, especially post 3050. I weould recommend this novel to any who have not read it or those looking to experience a bit of Battletech.

Comment: This was the novel that got me into Battletech in the first place. So you know I like it.

It is a little cheesy how the Thorns end up with a haul of Clan 'mechs at the end, but the build up to that is pretty darn good. And a nice (I think) illustration of how post-Clan mercenaries would operate. Not quite perfect, but good enough to get a twelve-year old to spend thirty dollars upon finding the box set. A good buy if you can find it.
