Overview:
    The Star League designed the Ranger to serve as a multi-role EW 'mech.  The need for such a
    'mech was pressing.  SLDF divisions were forced to rely on vehicle based EW platforms.
    These were adequate for some situations, but in extremely restrictive terrain or hazardous
    environments they could not substitute for a battlemech.  Sometimes VTOLs could be used, but
    these were extremely vulnerable in heavy combat.  The SLDF also lacked a fully-equipped EW
    platform in any configuration.  The Ranger was solicited in order to fill these holes.
    Unfortunately for the SLDF, the production line fell under Amaris' control, and the full
    production run of the 'mech was used against its intended masters.

Capabilities:
    The Ranger was valuable because it was fast and reasonably tough for its size.  An XL engine
    made the 'mech the fastest battlemech produced to date, slightly besting the Hussar and
    Hermes designs.  Designers recognized that in order to use its TAG equipment effectively the
    'mech might have to stand and face enemy fire for short periods of time, and therefore made
    every part of the 'mech, except for its head, capable of absorbing a PPC blast with no
    internal damage.  An anti-missile system was included to protect the 'mech from LRM fire
    while guiding incoming Arrow IV missiles.

Deployment:
    The Usurper produced nearly 100 Rangers.  These were used with great effectiveness against
    the SLDF army, which had a difficult time countering a design that had been specificially
    designed to be superior to anything else in its class.
    
    
    
    The Rim Worlds forces used the Ranger effectively as a scout and a raider.  On several
    occasions ECM concealed Rangers laying in wait for advancing SLDF waited until an enemy
    formation had passed around them before calling in supporting Arrow IV fire.  The Rangers
    would then use their unmatched speed to flee to safety while the enemy reeled in confusion.
