Panther PNT-9R |

When combined with the Dragon or Grand Dragon, this machine kills and it is as simple as that. Yes the PPC has a minimum range. However, the light weight of the Panther alllows it to be able to jump on top of the city high ground, and disappear as needed. Good armor combined with good firepower means it will destroy what it comes across, and when paired with powerful Dragons or speedy Jenners, its just an unstobable combination. |

I like the other two Balista machines, but this one has so many dice rolls attached to it, that I would end up screaming in frustration and boredom! BAD BAD BAD! Just use the bigger launchers and stop playing the numbers.
The other two were nifty however, especially the BAL-2 which might be a nasty surprise for someone someday soon...

Although the trio of LRM 5's is interesting, the speed, lack of jump jets, and the lack of armor is just sadly lacking. Fire support gets overrun all the time, and even a conventional fighter could wipe this mech out with a single shot. You're better off using a vehicle then one of these.

I am a huge fan of the Panther, and I appreciate what you are attempting to do, but the jump jets are what makes the Panther what it is. It "pounces" in the "jungle" of a city.
By removing that advantage, for a limited gain in speed, the Panther gains no significant advantage but looses its primary advantage. The speed boost will not help it in the country, and the lack of jump jets penalizes the machine in the city.
Overall the loss is not made up for by the machine gun (though I like the idea of such a weapon for the machine. Perhaps downgrading the SRM 4 to an SRM 2 would be what is needed. Another idea I had was reducing the PPC to a Large Laser).

This is a very interesting design, but I have one or two minor complaints. First, without the LRM 15 to lay down a serious amount of fire power, the unit lacks any sort of range advantage. It will need it. I say drop the AC/5 and replace it with a PPC, get the best use you can out of long range fire power. You won't use it up close, just as you won't use the AC/5 up close, and you have the heat sinks so put em to good use!
I would also simply make this design have two SRM 6's with 2 tons of ammo. This is becuase I am lazy when it comes to rolling dice, and frankly I never multi engage with such light weapons because it would be innefective. The SRM6 combo, however, does make it more of a threat to the Commando.
With the three extra tons I'd say more armor, and a rear facing laser or two. Depending on how much armor is left to be placed on the design. If you are worried about heat, another heat sink couldn't hurt.

I seriously like this design. It rocks. You have cluster and slug to rip holes and find crits. Excellent back up weapons and no XL engine. This thing is a beast! A Beast I tell you!

BattleMech: |
Vulcan VL-2T |
Rating: |
5.00 |
Comment: |
Although a number of people have expressed the opinion that this design is substandard due to its weak weapons, and overall mission profile. I'd like to point out that with 6/9/6 speed, this machine is deadly in the chosen enviornment of infantry: cities. Infantry are far more of a problem then most people give them credit for, and I have seen infantry wipe out "much better" machines when engaged in a city battle. The Vulcan, however, can make those little mudcrawlers show some respect:
1) The Flamer burns out their hiding spaces and will probably kill most of them off.
2) The Machine Gun... nuff said.
3) The AC/2 allows long range shelling of infantry positions.
4) The Medium Laser is an excellent all around weapon and can be used on light armored vehicles the infantry bring in to play.
In any major outfit, I would always keep a lance of Vulcans. You never know when you'll need one.

I've always liked this design, even with the light armor. I find it to be a good dependable machine, and an excellent counter design if you're facing Panthers.
The only suggestion I would make to beef it up I call the HCT-55F Hatchetman, a 55 ton version.
Increase armor to 9 tons, add two machine guns and one half ton of ammo for them, and a flamer.
Basically you're throwing on a Vulcan, but with much better armor and strike potential. I feel this is a very good change. Comments?

Bushwacker BSW-L1 |
Rating: |

I'm giving this mech a straight 50/50. I like the Bushwacker design but this fails to make the cut. I say, drop the LBX for an LB 10X, with two tons ammo. You end up with five more shots, and a far better range. The Bushwacker was supposed to be able to reach out and touch someone if I am remembering the original fluff.
Keep the ER Large Laser, now combined with the LB 10 X you really have a better design. To be honest I do not consider the loss of the LRM's to be that bad, but I would use the four tons saved for a set of machine guns and ammunition, as well as a pair of medium lasers for close in work. That gives you some coverage for when the long range dueling gets in close. You can switch off the ER Large and inflict a comparable amount of damage.
