After a lot of pondering, soul-searching, and discussions with various folks, I've decided to have my first official 'Mech construction contest. Before I get too far into the weeds, let me first tell you what you win if your selection is picked. That way you can decide if you even want to compete. Hopefully it'll entice you and you'll continue reading.

What do I win?
The winning selection will receive the following prizes:
  1. $75 gift certificate for use at Iron Wind Metals
  2. Ability to provide input and feedback into the modeling and appearance of the unit (unit will be done by our very own Stinger07)
  3. One (1) 3D-printed sculpt of the design (3D-printed sculpt once again provided by Stinger07)
  4. One (1) 3D-printed sculpt of up to 2 variants (to be flushed out at a later date)
  5. A customized rank (affiliation, rank, image) for use on the Mordel.Net forums (you define it)

What are the rules?
Myself along with a small group of selected friends will review all submitted entries to determine the overall winner. Entries will be judged based on how the submitted design fits the listed criteria (see below). The winner will be notified via email, so ensure you have a valid email address associated with your account. The following general rules apply:
  • The contest will run for one month from this post, and thus will end on July 20th at midnight eastern.
  • Each user may submit up to three (3) entries

The following construction guidelines must be adhered to:
  • All designs must be submitted through this sites unit design module (instructions below)
  • All rules levels are acceptable (this includes anything advanced or experimental as well as any extinct equipment)
  • The unit must be designed with an Introduction Year less then or equal to '3071'
  • The Year Specific Rules Level cannot be 'Unavailable' (all equipment must be available the year the design was introduced)
  • The unit must be designed with an 'Inner Sphere' Technology Base (you may use Mixed tech)
  • Fluff is not required, but it may help your submission if there's something you want to call out

The following outlines the criteria on which the designs will be judged
  • The design should fit my style of fighting, which places a high value on mobility as well as survivability
  • The design doesn't need to be "perfect". I like flaws (so long as they aren't gaping) as they add flavor to a design
  • The design needs to be realistic from an equipment and cost perspective. While everything is allowed, if something is ultra-rare or costly in-universe, then there needs to be a good story for how I happen to have it (you'll definitely need fluff in this case)

To give you an idea of what types of 'Mechs I like, the following canon designs are considered some of my favorites (in no particular order):
How do I design a 'Mech?
To design a unit and submit it, do the following:
  1. Ensure you are registered and logged in to this site
  2. Navigate to the unit design module via the menu at 'Ministry of Intelligence > Units > BattleMechs > Submit Custom Unit' (or just click HERE)
  3. If you wish to base the design off an existing unit, you may do so by loading that unit via the icon in the upper left of the design area (red arrow)
  4. For the Privacy option, ensure 'Private' is selected. This will hide your design from all users except for yourself and the judges, therefore ensuring that others don't steal your ideas (once the deadline is reached all units will be converted to Public)
  5. You can use any Name and Model you want, just ensure it ends in '-MB' (for Mordel Blacknight)
  6. When done, simply hit Submit

If there are any questions about this contest or how to use the design module, feel free to send me a site message, or feel free to ask them here.

Well, you didn't put "MB" in the title somewhere, but now that I know it was one you submitted, I'll consider it. Smile

Each member can submit up to three!

I caught your post on the BattleTech Facebook page, figured I'd sign in and throw a submission up. There's an Amaris Civil War prototype, nice and maneuverable, ready for giggles. I didn't see the "private" and "-MB" requirements until after I posted it...

I think I'm gonna toss those six Chernobogs into my Terran campaign. Gotta account for their destruction, right?

No worries, and thanks for submitting! I'll delete the non-private one for you along with the post. Don't want anyone to get any ideas off of your hard work now, do we? Smile

I'm starting to build this in SolidWorks now, to look like a Star-League-era take on the Caesar. Chicken legs, the same kind of rounding that the SLDF designs were known for, and some of the Dragoon's styling, especially around the arms. I'll post the artwork for it later.

Okay... I've made you something silly. Hope that I didn't screw up the submission.

Well, I've submitted two designs so far. though I was bit miffed that on my second design I could not use Ferro-fibrous armor or the LB 10X I had originally planned due to something going wrong with the design program.

Can you elaborate on what the issue was? It looks like you used IE 11, and when I opened your design to edit in the same browser I could see Ferro in the armor dropdown and the LB 10X in the weapon list. Was it a problem of selection? Something after selection?

Couldn't remember my password, and when I tried to use the "Forgot password" button, it said the email I typed in didn't match the user name for some reason...

But yeah, it's me...

Design submitted! Will you be discussing runners up in addition to your favorite? Or will there be a thread where we can see everyone's work after the selection has been made? It is always great to see what insanity someone else managed to cook up!
