Overview:
Much has been stated in previous Technical Readouts about the scouting abilities of the
Ostscout. Its enhanced sensor arrays and superior electronic suites have long been touted as
superior to virtually any other 'Mech's systems. However, few recall that there was once an
even more superior model used by the Royal units of the Star League. That advanced model was
the OTT-5Jb.
Capabilities:
The OTT-5Jb Ostscout has most of the same capabilities of its later counterpart, but is an
even more effective scout, as an extralight engine and endo-steel skeleton give it enough
tonnage to mount the impressive Beagle Active Probe and Guardian ECM Suites in either side
torso, along with a TAG unit for artillery spotting in its CT directly beneath the medium
laser. The 'Mech also mounts a recon camera in its head for spotting for indirect LRM fire,
and the half dozen remote sensor dispensers divided evenly between its arms increase its
sensor range without actually needing to be present in the area. The Beagle active probe, in
conjunction with its already impressive sensors allow the 'Mech to detect enemies at ranges
unheard of otherwise, and its impressive communication systems allow it to readily report
such findings back to the unit's headquarters (note: The OTT-5Jb Ostscout has the "Improved
Communications" and "Improved Sensors" positive quirks. To protect all this equipment, an additional 2 tons of armor were added to the design, beefing up the protection on the legs, torso and head regions of the design. Ten double strength heat sinks keep the 'Mech ultra-cool even with full range jumps and firing of the medium laser.
Of course, to get this kind of performance, some sacrifices had to be made, the most obvious
of which is the expensive, fragile extra-light engine. The 'Mech's sensors and
communications systems are also hard to work on, and spare parts can be hard to find (note:
has the "Hard to Maintain" and "Non-Standard Parts" negative quirks). Knowing these facts,
the designers also worked some deficiencies into the 'Mech's sole ranged weapon, hoping to
keep the machine's pilots out of combat (note: The 'Mech suffers from the "Inaccurate
Weapon" and "No Cooling Jacket" negative traits).
Deployment:
The OTT-5Jb Ostscout was deployed only to Royal BattleMech units of the Star League, and
even then, only in very sparing numbers. It's very likely less than 2 dozen in total of
these 'Mechs were ever even constructed, and less made it into actual use. The design has
been lost for centuries since the horrors of the Amaris Uprising and the Liberation of
Terra. The last of these was thought to have been destroyed in freeing Terra from the yoke
of Amaris.
