Overview:
The Dark Wolf is the workhorse of Arctic Silence's private army and the symbol of the entire
organisation. Ever since Arctic Silence became an established power in the Inner Sphere in
the early 32nd century, the chief engineers had been planning to construct a 'Mech that
would symbolise all the group stood for. The Dark Wolf is the end product of that process,
20 years down the line.
A masterpiece of mobility and acurate firepower, the Dark Wolf certainly stands above the
crowd - figuratively speaking of course: the Dark Wolf is an example of quite possibly the
finest quad 'Mech ever produced in the history of the Inner Sphere, but it's not going to be
winning any height competitions with its sleek and low chassis - designed to minimise the
'Mech's silhouette to distrupt enemy targeting systems in the same way that the Maruader
does with its unique body shape.
You do have to be prepared to pay for your money's worth though: at nearly 15 million
C-Bills for a 60 ton 'Mech you might be better off looking elsewhere if you don't have deep
enough pockets to afford the Dark Wolf.
Arctic Silence has mass produced this 'Mech on Págos from the very hour that the design was
completed, pumping out between 10 and 12 of them each year. As of 3138, Arctic Silence is
currently in the process of constructing a new primary factory for the 'Mech on Exter VII
inside its territory on Plymouth. While that does mean that one of the Dark Wolves it
produces each year will have to be sent to the Federated Suns under the terms of the ASFSA
Agreement, Arctic Silence are all for improving relations with their most powerful ally.
Probably the most impressive part of the Dark Wolf is its design. Made to appear as
life-like as possible, scientists used real life wolves imported from Terra and then
transposed their body shape onto a quad 'Mech frame using computers. The only part not
included was the tail. The head is a snarling wolf's head, even featuring an open jaw lined
with metallic teeth and slitted eyes. However, it was a step too far to make the jaw capable
of biting enemies. Despite the 'Mech having such a large visual head, only a small part of
it is actually the weakly armoured section where the pilot is situated: the rest is part of
the side and centre torsos and as such it is very hard to get through the thick armour
plating to expose the internal strucure.
It's a sight to behold when the Dark Wolf fires it's PPC through its gaping maw, a view
unseen by any living thing in the Inner Sphere prior to the Battle of Karden Valley in 3127.
Despite using the Dark Wolf for almost five years prior to this, the Dark Wolf has it's
Light PPC removed because of issues related to the head from the weapon frying the sensors
of the 'Mech. Eventually, a solution was reached by placing heat vents in the sides of the
Dark Wolf's "neck". This means that when the PPC fires, the discharge from the weapon blows
out at 45 degree angles from the 'Mech in great blue plumes - similar to those of the
ancient KGC-010 - a rare King Crab variant from the days of the Star League way back in
2743.
Clan Wolf-in-exile was so impressed by the 'Mech's post-3127 performance that they ordered
10 to be added to their frontline armies [since most of the technology is Clan-standard],
offering to supply the expensive Clan 300 XL Fusion Engines of the Dark Wolf for all future
K2s built as payment. Arctic Silence Gladly accepted, seeing as how they had been previously
purchasing them at great expense from Clan Sea Fox.
Capabilities:
The Dark Wolf K2 is 60 tons of stealth and destruction, utilising a Clan-Tech 300 XL Fusion
Engine to reach speeds of 108 kph when the -K2's MASC is activated - allowing the 'Mech to
stay at the distance it wants to be at from the enemy [which is usually heavier and
therefore better armed). An Endo Steel skeleton frees up weight for this 'Mech's hefty
weapons configuration.
The Dark Wolf K2 has no arms since it is a quad 'Mech, so all of it's weapons are in its
side torsos and head. Each side torso carries a Clan-Tech Ultra AC/5, supplied by 1 ton of
CASE II protected ammo, and a Clan-Tech Medium Pulse Laser for when the enemy needs to be
reminded that if you get too close the wolf it will bite you. To supplement its primary
Autocannon weapons, the K2 also carries a Light PPC, unusually in the head of the 'Mech. The
Since the Dark Wolf is designed to engage at a safe distance from damaging close range
weapons such as SRMs, Autocannon/20s and the like, accuarcy is paramount. A combination of
shock absorbers and advanced circuitry means the Dark Wolf has greatly improved targeting at
range, less so at shorter distances (but if a Dark Wolf is within its short range bracket,
something has gone badly wrong).
*NOTES ABOUT GAMEPLAY USAGE OF THE DARK WOLF K2*
If you are using Design Quirks, these are the quirks that should be used for the Dark Wolf:
-Long Range Targeting [to-hit modifiers become +1 at short range, +2 at medium range & +3 at
long range {Consult Maximum Tech for greater detail} ]
-Narrow/Low Profile [+1 modifier to all to-hit rolls made against this 'Mech]
Increase the cost or battle value by 20% to balance the use of these improvements (increase
the value which is the same as the one you are allocating between your units in the
scenario). E.g, I have 15000 BV to choose units for my two lances. I want to use a Dark Wolf
K2 with design quirks. Therefore, I multiply the K2's BV of 1 889 by 1.2 to account for the
design quirks' effect, giving a final BV of 2 269.

side torsos and head.
-Long Range Targeting [to-hit modifiers become +1 at short range, +2 at medium range & +2 at
long range]
{Consult Maximum Tech for an alternative rule which leaves the modifiers at +1/+2/+3 reduce
the BV/cost multiplier to 15% if you use this rule* }
-Narrow/Low Profile [+1 modifier to all to-hit rolls made against this 'Mech]
* Increase the cost or battle value by 20% to balance the use of these improvements
(increase the value which is the same as the one you are allocating between your units in
the scenario). E.g, I have 15000 BV to choose units for my two lances. I want to use a Dark
Wolf K2 with design quirks. Therefore, I multiply the K2's BV of 1 889 by 1.2 to account for
the design quirks' effect, giving a final BV of 2 269.
Deployment:
The Dark Wolf has been one of the more widely deployed 'Mechs that has been introduced in
the late Republic/ early Dark Ages. As mentioned before, there are several Dark Wolves in
the armies of Clan Wolf-in-exile and of the Federated Suns. Most others remain with Arctic
Silence, because they charge an overly high price in general sales because of how much they
prize this 'Mech.
The most notable battle which the Dark Wolf has featured in was a massive pirate raid
against Arctic Silence's Industrial Complex on Exeter VII in an attempt to seize invaluable
information to ransom/ sell to the highest bidder (since Arctic Silence produces many 'Mechs
unique to their factories). In response to the advancing battalion of pirate 'Mechs, Arctic
Silence scrambled a company of Dark Wolves to slow the pirates enough for the assault 'Mechs
to get to the battlefield. To everyone's astonishment, the Dark Wolf company shredded the
entire pirate battalion, not losing a single 'Mech (although three suffered critical
damage). The few pirates who survived were taken to New Avalon for a show trial before
execution. The message was clear: Mess with Arctic Silence and - if you manage to survive
against them - you'll have to deal with the AFFS next.
