Overview:
The Naginata NG-X-5 was designed as a direct answer to the growing school of thought that
the Naginata was just too big, cumbersome and lightly armoured for the punch it delivered.
The Thunderclap, as it became known, indeed dismissed this idea from all those who were
unlucky enough to encounter it!
Capabilities:
While Alisa Wolfstein's Arctic Silence focused on making the best of the technology then
available in the Inner Sphere for their Sting Jet, Kruis' Lyran group of elite mercenaries,
Desert Chaos, used their strong political and ideological similarities with Clan Sea Fox to
acquire production rights to several uprated Clan weapons and systems and mounted them on an
Inner Sphere designed chassis. The changes are as follows:
-Standard chassis swapped for Inner Sphere Endo Steel
-Inner Sphere Lord's Light ER PPC swapped for Clan ER PPC
-Inner Sphere Coventry Star Fire LRM-15s swapped for Clan Streak LRM-15s
-Armour increased from 15 to 18.5 tons
-Three jump jets added for greater manoeuvrability
-Introduction of a small cockpit
-Removal of one ton of LRM-15 ammo (40 shots rather than 48)
-C3 Master Computer swapped for a C3i
-Inner Sphere double heat sinks swapped for Clan double heat sinks
-Clan ER Small Laser added
Deployment:
The most notable use of the Thunderclap was in 3127,during the last battle of the operation
code named 'Abduct' in which several high ranking officials were taken from an Inner Sphere
planet for the extraction of important confidential information. Despite the planet being
protected by a large portion of the Arctic Silence mercenary force, Kylo Kruis in his
personal Naginata was able to escape with the officials and most of his own force, even
after being ambushed by the defending group. The exact details of this conflict are
classified until the situation is deemed secure by Federated Suns, in whose territory the
campaign took place.
Variants:
No variants of this 'Mech are known to have been made. The production run itself only
totalled 15 units, many of which were heavily modified with Dark Age technology, often to
the point of being unrecognisable as a Naginata. Kruis' personal Thunderclap was painted in
a matt light grey with fluorescent green highlights and an intimidating face design in red.
Notable MechWarriors:
As well as Kylo Kruis, the Thunderclap was often piloted by his second in command which
changed several times during his career as founder and leader of the Desert Chaos mercenary
group.
