Overview:
The KGC-004 is an experiment in attempting to fit 4 Rotary Autocannon 5s on into the chassis
of a single Battlemech. Arctic Silence had been wanting to produce a variant of the King
Crab for several years, both because of its fearsome presence on the battlefield and its use
of heavy Autocannons as its primary weapons (this great respect for heavy autocannons would
lead to the creation of the Warbird's WRB-3_ Series line several decades later).
The 'Mech showed great potential in testing, but to achieve the maximum damage in combat
Mechwarriors had to risk the RAC/5s jamming far more than its engineers wanted. So they
approached Arctic Silence's Top Secret Research Scientists (who are so Top Secret that they
live in isolation from the outside world, in a hidden facility on a moon in uncharted
territory) to see if they could design a Rotary Autocannon which doesn't jam as much. They
were unable to achieve this due to the limited funds that the KGC-004 engineers were able to
provide for the research, but instead created a computer system to aid the Mechwarrior in
unjamming the Rotaries when they inevitably do. The inclusion of the AI-assistance has
increased the unjamming success rate by over 60%. These rare systems are twice as expensive
as a standard Rotary Autocannon 5. They are only available to Arctic Silence, and even then
they are only produced in limited numbers. As of the early 3120s, this "Improved Rotary
Autocannon 5" has only been mounted on the KGC-004.
Capabilities:
A KGC-004 is the last thing you want to see lumbering into view on the battlefield - when
this 100-ton giant is on the prowl, no 'Mech is safe. Capable of stripping as much as 7.5
tons of armour from an enemy unit in one turn, by firing 24 AC/5 rounds at ranges of up to
450 metres, the KGC-004 requires serious attention from any opposing force; or else they may
discover that one of their assault 'Mechs has been forcefully transformed into a smoking
wreck of twisted metal whilst they were shooting at a Locust in their flanks.
Because of the unrivalled fear factor this 'Mech possesses, which is heightened by it being
common knowledge that only the best of Arctic Silence's already above-average Mechwarriors
are given the honour of piloting an assault 'Mech, several Mercenary groups have outright
surrendered and rapidly withdrawn upon sighting this monstrosity, choosing the wrath of
their employer when they return empty-handed over facing off against a KGC-004 in combat.
With enough ammunition to continuously fire at the weapons' maximum rate for 80 seconds, a
competent pilot should not have to fear their guns running dry. CASE II was included in each
side torso to completely negate the potential weakness created by having so much explosive
ammunition.
To free up enough weight to mount the four RAC/5s, a Light Fusion Vlar 300 Engine was used -
the 'Mech's designers found this to be an acceptable tradeoff between survivability and
mobility. Arctic Silence pushed the boundaries of their manufacturing capabilities by
incorporating a Clan-Tech Endo-Composite Skeleton into the design because the comparative
Inner Sphere version was too space inefficient. To provide effective damage output should
the primary weapons system be compromised, a secondary weapons system consisting of two
Clan-Tech Heavy Medium Lasers was installed. These are purchased from Clan Sea Fox, a feat
made possible by the ambitious trade agreement between Arctic Silence and the so-called
"Merchant Nation".
Deployment:
Only used by Arctic Silence, the KGC-004 performs admirably in almost any terrain but is at
its best when fighting in hills - the differing elevations provide excellent cover for when
the Mechwarror needs to unjam the Autocannons, while the sweeping LOS you can get from the
hilltops means there is nowhere the enemy can hide to escape the withering hail of shells.
