I've been away for a loooong while, off raising 3 young mechwarriors (Check out Irontail Hedges on https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCoPufSN_u7cNEX6fhY1hnuQ--proud Dad plug) and learning a lot of new skills...some of which may even be useful in real life.
One of those recent rabbit holes is 3D printing. I've found there are a lot of 'mechs out there on 3D print sites in 28mm and Classic scale.
Now the quality depends on two things: The quality of the STL file, and the know-how of the guy doing the printing.
I know in other game systems, the official tournaments, even painting contests are pretty much against them.
I just wondered what your thoughts were on using 3D printed mechs in general. _________________ Storm "The More that thou sweatest and swearest in training, the less thou bleedest and diest in combat."--Dick Marcinko

We've used coins for 'mechs before...I figure as long as it fits in the hex you're using, go for it. _________________ www.210sportsblog.com

Like Chihawk said folks have used other things to proxy mechs.
3D printed stuff is no different, they are perfect for the custom home made mechs and if you are at an offical tourney held by any gaming company, then you would know to use their products or they provide them for you.
The only folks against 3D printed mechs are the same ones who tell you it's okay spend upto $20 a mech or space marine etc...and use that it is the cost of business line, sure it is, and companies know they have a locked in market. Smarter companies will sell STL files and offer things you can only get from them at better prices. But then again what do fans know about anything they are a fan of? _________________ Karagin Only the dead have seen the end of war. - Plato

Since I've started I've used scratchbuilt, kitbashed and proxy mechs: 4 Epic Dreadnoughts became Kanazuchi battlearmor, 2 Eldar Scout Titans got kitbashed into custom mechs, Micro Machines are the bulk of my conventional vehicles, fighters, and VTOLs, and I run a squad of Epic Sentinels as ultralight mechs with an AC/2 each.
I have no problem with an official tournament requiring competitors to use their products. In paintball, the company sponsoring the event requires you buy their paint onsite, and no one bats an eye (it also helps prevent frozen paintballs being snuck in). My feeling is that if they are putting it on, they can set the rules.
Funny you would mention the phrase, "Space Marine." And I think you've got it right. Companies will soon need to change their business model to sell the STLs, because there are some darn good modelers out there (I'm not even touching Chinese pirate sites, but I know of a couple of guys who run pirated minis in their armies, and no one knows the difference).
There's also the learning curve to be able to print something that doesn't look like poo, and some people don't have the patience for that.
The best one I got was when I posted screenshots of a model on a CONVERSION page for that game, and my post got banned because the admin didn't know the lore. Then when I argued to get it reinstated, someone said, "All [I] did was take something someone else had done, and change it up some."
...Kind of like everyone else was doing, only I did it electronically instead of with plastic and greenstuff.
When I start printing some Battletech-scale stuff, I'll try to share some pictures. _________________ Storm "The More that thou sweatest and swearest in training, the less thou bleedest and diest in combat."--Dick Marcinko
