================================================================================================
Overview:
Long a dream of Team Banzai, the RFL-2B Rifleman-II required the discovery of Star
League-era weapons systems to become relity. Knowing of Hanse Davion's high regard for the
Rifleman design, Team Banzai performed an engineering study for an improved, heavier version
of the Rifleman in the late 3040's. The Rifleman-II prototype was to be presented to Prince
Davion as a birthday gift.
Finding a suitable power plant was the main problem that delayed production of the
prototype. The new 300XL engines the design requires are suitable for a wide variety of
'Mechs, and so are extremely difficult to find. It took the intervention of Hanse Davion
himself to hasten the procurement of the necessary engines, even though their use was not
revealed to him (The gift needed to be a surprise after all).
In 3052, the Inner Sphere mourned the passing of Hanse Davion, one of history's most
colorful and powerful leaders. At his funeral, the BattleMech was nicknamed "the Davion."
Capabilities:
The first designs called for the 'Meh to carry the new Bofors anti-missle system, but this
was replaced in the last two prototypes by the Aegis Guardian ECM suite. Engineers argued
that the Guardian system would deflect more Narc and Artemis missiles than the anti-missile
system. However, testing of vehicles with both systems continues at New Avalon test ranges.
Thee antennae of the Garrett D2s-1 targeting/tracking system are positioned at an unusual
angle which, along with its added bulk, serves to distinguish the Rifleman II from its
predecessor. This allows the antenna to double as wings for a cockpit ejection system,
similar to that found on the Hatchetman and Axeman. This system automatically engages should
both Gauss Rifles explode, an unlikely but potentially lethal possibility.
The Rifleman II carries its most noticeable and deadly weapon systems in its arms. each
arm houses a Poland Main Model FGauss Rifle and a Defiance 1001 Extended Range Particle
Projection Cannon. This weapon configuration can deal out massive damage at all ranges, even
at shorter ranges where older PPCs had difficulty targeting. The sixteen double heat sinks
keep the 'Mech cool in almost any environment, and ensure a high rate of fire.
Variants:
Besides the two variants currently being tested, a design study has been in initiated in
response to the 'Mechs short range firepower being inadequate. Engineers are thinking of
adding two medium lasers in the torso to replace the Guardian ECM (or missile systems),
which also necessitates the removal of a half ton of armor. Thee chief designer is opposed
to this, since the heat curve would rise above safe levels, and important defensive systems
would have to be sacrificed.
Notable MechWarriors:
Colonel William Blanton has served with distinction in the Ninth Arcturan Guards RCT for
twenty years. Like many Inner Sphere MechWarriors, he saw heavy fighting against the Clans,
and was also involved in several engagements during the War of '39. His high marks at the
Nagelring, distinguished service record, technical expertise, and experience with heavy
'Mechs made him a prime candidate to test pilot the Rifleman II> His abilities have helped
pinpoint minor problems with the Hermes 300XL engine housing. His gunnery instincts have
helped to resolve targeting system and attack coordination problems much faster than usual
for anew design. His reports indicate his extreme confidence in its combat abilities.
