Overview:
In late 3052 engineers at the DSC Armory began a project to design an advanced assault
battlemech to serve in front line forces across the Inner Sphere. It was dubbed the 'Osiris
Project' and was to become the new money-maker for the manufacturer. Design difficulties and
procurement of advanced technology from the Gray Death Memory Core lead the Armory to
abandon the Osiris Project after three years of development with no success.
With the opening of the large Armory plant on Keystone, the project was revived. Along with
assistance from Earthwerks, engineers began a redesign of the original Osiris using updated
technology. The first battlemech of the series rolled off the assembly lines of the
Keystone plant on August 2nd of 3061.
Capabilities:
Based on similar design principles as the Awesome and Stalker, the Osiris is built to last.
The DSC Armory envisioned a new heavy line mech in the assault class to provide great deal
of firepower on the battlefield while able to withstand counter-attacks. Cost was a definite
issue for the small manufacturer though, and several concessions were made from the original
design.
Originally the Osiris was intended to be a faster machine, capable of matching the
Battlemaster for speed. In order to get the desired combat performance, an extra-light
engine was required. Due to difficulty of obtaining a reliable supply of extra-light
engines, engineers chose to instead mount a cheaper GM 270 plant. While the Osiris does
maintain a respectable speed of about 50 kph, this is
a marked decrease from the original 64 kph that was intended.
In order to keep the Osiris operational on the battlefield, the designers provided the
Osiris with sixteen and a half tons of DSC Standard armor. This shows that the Osiris has an
extra bit of staying power over other large line mechs. Of course, there are battlemechs
with heavier armor, but the Osiris also protects both mech and mechwarrior with a Cellular
Ammunition Storage Equipment
system for the volatile autocannon rounds. So should the armor be penetrated and the
autocannon ammunition explode, the battlemech would be salvageable, and could possibly even
continue to fight. The weapons package is the biggest selling point on the beast. A Zeus
Slingshot gauss rifle embedded in the right arm forms the main source of firepower on the
Osiris. Capable of dealing extreme damage to targets at long range, the gauss rifle fulfills
its role as primary armament exceedingly well. Backing up the gauss rifle is a new
development from Imperator Automatic Weaponry. The Imperator Automatic Ultra-10 autocannon
is capable of delivering a hail of shells out to moderate ranges. Given the high rate of
fire the Ultra-10 can achieve, designers have provided three tons of ammunition, enough to
last over two minutes of firing at the maximum rate. Rounding out the weapons package are a
pair of arm mounted RAMTech 1200 heavy laser and a pair of RAMTech 800P medium pulse lasers.
The older model RAMTech 1200 has been problematic throughout development, and several buyers
have suggested replacing them with Blazefire Sweetshot extended-range lasers, but designers
felt comfortable with the older weapons system which would keep cost down. With the
additional lasers, the Osiris finds itself most comfortable at medium ranges.
Deployment:
Currently the Free Worlds League seems to be buying the vast majority of Osiris battlemechs.
Several have been sold to the Lyran Alliance as well, and orders are expected to increase
once battlefield performance is fully demonstrated. There have been delays in deployments
though, as several divisions have reported actuator
problems with the hip and upper leg assemblies. Designers are looking into the issue to
determine the source of the problems and whether a recall is warranted.
Variants:
OSR-11B - On the suggestion of some mechwarriors with the Free Worlds Legionnaires, the
Keystone plant has begun producing a variation on the standard model OSR. The OSR-11B
replaces the Imperator autocannon with a Kali Yama Weapon Industries class 10 LB-X cannon.
To account for the loss in firepower by removing the rapid firing Imperator cannon, the
medium pulse lasers have been removed and a third RAMTech 1200 large laser has been mounted
in the center torso. Too accommodate the increased heat of the added laser, an additional
double-strength heat sink is carried in the left arm.
OSR-11BX - A simple field refit of the 11B model, the Free Worlds Legionnaires have found
that the RAMTech laser mounted in the center torso is easily replaced by a Victory Nickel
Alloy extended range model large laser imported from the Draconis Combine.
