Overview:
"Whacha doing Simon?"
"Engaging in idle speculation."
"Can I help?"
The choice was taken away from Simon as the little girl climbed into his lap so she could
see the small holographic display. Simon sighed, accepting the inevitability of this
distraction.
"You're, I mean you are, making a mech arn't you?"
Simon winced at the contractions. The girl tried to be like her mother but her father was a
corrupting influence. He replied, "Not so much making as redesigning. An enemy built a
mech like this one and I am taking it apart and making a better one."
"So you can beat him up?"
"I very much doubt it. They are far away and are being dealt with by several different
people. I just wanted to figure out why their mech was made the way it was."
He reached out and modified a cosmetic feature on the holo display. "See. I am finished
now. You should go rejoin your Sibkith now."
"You are just trying to get rid of me."
"Yes."
The reaction was unexpected. The girl's eyes welled up with tears as she slid off his lap.
"I'm telling mommy you don't like me!" she wailed as she ran from the room.
Simon was taken aback. Though to be fair he really did not have that much experience with
children. From his own experiences as a child he would of expected a savage beating if he
had ever behaved in such an undisciplined manner. And then there was the fur. His memory
was quite clear that girls did not have fur like that when he was growing up. Oh well, it
did not matter much. He would have to see his commander soon enough anyways. He returned
to the Holo display bringing up a separate tab. It was time to resume reading this
"Necronomicon" thing.
Capabilities:
"So this is the ogre who hates you quiaff?"
"Neg? That's Simon. He's not a robotic tank." said the girl with a confused expression.
The confused expression replaced the half smile belonging to her mother as her daughter's
response blindsided her. Fortunately proper clan grammar came to her rescue. "That is
Simon. He is not a robotic tank. And you did not answer my question. Is he the one who
hates you?"
Confusion was forgotten as the girl returned to the glare she had reserved for Simon since
he had entered her mothers office. "He hates me!"
"Oh I very much doubt that. Simon do you hate Patty?"
"I do not hate Patricia."
"Do you Like Patty?"
Simon really found this kind of thing to be a waste of time. The practice of sibkiths and
having families raise even the warrior caste young was so at odds with the brutally
efficient Sibko's of his youth. Still the politics of leadership never changed. He knew a
pick up line when he saw one. "Yes I like Patricia."
"And do you think she is pretty?"
"Yes Patricia is pretty."
"And do you like my fur?"
Simon managed not to clench his teeth as he responded, "Yes I like your fur."
"There. You see. He likes you. He thinks you are pretty and he even likes your fur. Are
you happy now?"
Patty was a bit sullen as she responded, "okay."
"Tell you what. You take this to daddy and have him brush out your fur." Clarisa handed
the girl a brush she had just salvaged from a desk drawer.
"Okay!" said the much brighter girl as she slid out of her mothers embrace and scampered out
the door.
As the door closed Clarisa muttered, "What in the world was she talking about, 'robotic
tanks'?"
Simon actually smiled a bit, "Ogres. A pre-spaceflight fictional game involving a computer
driven super tank vs conventional forces. It was later used as the name of a pre-hegemony
advanced tank which was the precursor of the Bolo battle tanks currently in use. I have
also heard that fully robotic tanks are being considered to augment the clockwork."
Clarisa was floored. Simon had just used three times his usual daily quota of words. "It
is not like you to be so excited about 'mere' vehicles Simon."
"No Star Colonel, but Patricia shows promise if she is memorizing vehicle identifications
this early. She might make a fine mechwarrior some day."
Clarisa preened at the compliment to her daughter, "If she ever grows out of that stupid fur
fad. Hopefully having her father take care of grooming her will encourage him to encourage
her to get rid of the stuff."
"The fur is not so bad. You have to admit the rainbows on her checks are a finely done
touch. It takes real skill to get biomods that fine."
"You're ok with the fur?" exclaimed Clarisa forgetting the contraction in her surprise. "I
mean you are almost reichist in your anti-genetic tampering beliefs. I am not sure if you
ever did forgive us for the prolong treatments when we adopted you.
"I forgave you eventually. And everything has it's place. This is part of what I wanted to
see you about."
"Very well Star Commander, you did ask for this meeting. And now that certain ruffled
feathers have been soothed let us get on with it."
"As you will Star Colonel. I request a transfer to become a Seeker."
Deployment:
"So I hear you got my wife to shut up for three whole minutes."
"She did seem taken aback by my request Peter Kerrige."
"I'd say. Stolid Smoke Jaguar adoptee into Clan Mongoose decides to pick up a Goliath
scorpion tradition. I believe that is just a bit crazy. What brought it on? I couldn't
make much out of Clarisa's mutterings. Something about great old ones, ancient history,
cultists, and some old book."
Simon sighed, accepting the inevitability of this distraction.
"It started when reports of cultist activity in the Inner Sphere showed up in the situation
report feeds. Out of curiosity I looked over the hardware being used. Mostly standard
conventional forces. Clan tech used in the limited number of mechs. One of the mechs,
called the Shub-Niggurath, caught my eye being a heavy missile platform. I found the
design's use of lighter launchers to preserve symmetry to be annoying. I tried to correct
the design using alternative technologies, but apparently despite clear recollections of
being able to mount Artemis in the head for a center torso mounted launcher I was unable to
mount the desired center lined launcher. So I decided to play with other missile systems to
see what would come of it. I ended up with a design mixing ATM's with LRM's."
"So far so good. Playing with other people's mechs and putting them back together
virtually. Par for the course in terms of what you find entertaining. But not leading to
your current bought with insanity. Go on."
"The unanswered questions from the situation report began to plague me. Who was outfitting
this group. Though I had started with ATMs, switching to iATMs only requires a minor
upgrade. This at least seems to preclude Society involvement. Trying to find clues in
their motivation I dug into this holy book they seem to be trying to find additional
versions of, this Necornomicon. I did not find much in the way of clues there, but I did
find a reference which if taken in the right context could prove fatal to humanity. The
line speaks of Cluthulhu laying with Shub-Niggurath and creating the armies to destroy the
Elder things. I think that Shub-Niggurath is a Star Forge."
"Whoa. Hold on. The Star Forge is just a legend in it's own right. Not even an entirely
human legend at that. A giant von neumann factory that uses stellar material to mass
produce weapons. You would think we would of noticed something like that."
"If it were operational. But what if it was hidden, or damaged? Is the risk of such a
thing falling into the hands of cultists worth the cost of sending an Old Smoke Jaguar on a
fools errand?"
"When you put it that was.... But becoming a Seeker? A full Mystic Seeker? You'll be
sacrificing your Codex for it."
"True, the cost of undergoing the Mystic Seeker Genetic Mods is the resetting of my Codex,
but I will have time to regain my lost legacy if I survive. Besides, It seems that I had
achieved a high enough value to have a Sibkith that partially uses my legacy. Your wife let
that slip when she was attempting to dissuade me from my quest. It seems a number of my
'progeny' will be growing up with you. Also it seems that one of them will be Patricia's
half brother."
Peter shrugged. Another batch of kids to raise? No problem. "Heh. Well I don't know what
will be worse a Cross between you and Clarisa, or Me and You. I'll be sure to order plenty
of duct tape either way. How soon until you leave?"
"I need to finish packing, Overseeing the trial of position for my Star's command slot, and
begin genetic therapies. I should be ready to leave in a week. The Seeker is coming to get
me then."
"Wait, THE Seeker. You don't mean..."
"Yes. Him. I have met him before you know, just before his raid on Tukayyid..."
