Overview:
Although the Barghest would eventually become a noted BattleMech within the LAAF and LCAF,
few know that there were built on design work done decades before the Clans even arrived.
Those older prototypes looked much akin to their later descendants, but were deemed not
effective due to different flaws. The first, the BGS-X1, attempted to combine a large bore
autocannon with an experimental binary laser cannon. However, the excessive heat generated
by the latter weapon alone proved too much for the single heat sinks in use at the time, as
firing just this weapon alone could quickly overheat the machine, much less combining the
firepower of both of its guns.
The second, the BGS-X2, replaced the binary laser cannon with a standard particle cannon and
a pair of extra heat sinks. Although this new design could hit almost as hard at longer
range and for less heat, it was deemed to be undergunned.
The BGS-X3 actually came the closest to being fully deployed of any of the prototype
Barghest units. Dropping the heavy autocannon for a slightly light Type 10 autocannon, and
mounting two large lasers and the larger store of heat sinks found in the BGS-X2, it took a
longer period for the X3 to overheat, even mounting two large lasers, but the ammunition
supply for its autocannon was limited to a single ton of munitions, limiting its engagement
time.
