I know, I just got home, turned on the news and that is the welcome home I got. I hope the Sox put a mourning band on their uniforms for the rest of the year.

No, even better than Cobb...
Cobb's BA is higher (.366 to .344), but Williams has him beat on Slugging and OBP (.481 and .634 vs Cobb's .423 and .512)
Cobb has almost 1000 more total bases, but that's in almost 7 more seasons then Williams.
Cobb may have been a better all-around player, but as a hitter Williams is so far ahead of everyone else it's scary.

Ted Williams, a man who displayed no pretenses of humility in his later years, flat out said he [Williams] was the third greatest hitter after Cobb and Ruth in that order. I have to agree with Williams.
I'll even conceed the point about Williams being the better hitter, but I will go to my grave thinking Cobb was the best player, ever.
