Think about this:
a. The number of physicians in the US is 700,000.
b. Accidental deaths caused by Physicians per year is 120,000.
c. Accidental deaths per physician is 0.171. (US Dept. of Health & Human
Services)

Then think about this:
a. The number of gun owners in the US is 80,000,000.
b. The number of accidental gun deaths per year (all age groups) is
1,500.
c. The number of accidental deaths per gun owner is .0000188.

Statistically, doctors are approximately 9,000 times more dangerous than
gun owners.

FACT: NOT EVERYONE HAS A GUN, BUT ALMOST EVERYONE HAS AT LEAST ONE
DOCTOR.

Please alert your friends to this alarming threat. We must ban doctors
before this gets out of hand.

Let me guess. You were the little kid down the street that hated hospitals and was scared of needles. Right?

i personely don't find this funny, because of this sad fact..... the trauma center that helped safe my life has had to close its doors. why because some f@@@ed up inscurence company finds its cheeper to no longer carry malpractice insurance.

so right now, if you get hurt in southern nevada you've got a 45 min trip to the nearest trauma unit, in california.

while i understand this was a joke, its a sad and very real fact. an nevada is not the only state suffering from this situation. just remember this the next time your driving home, because all it takes is 1 stupid person to change your life.

Well, to take a joke seriously, let's really look at malpractice insurance and how the medical practice is handled.

Right now, no matter how many times your doctor has been investigated, no matter how many times he or she has been sued, you do not have access to that information from the medical board. Why? Doctors are shielded by the government.

So, with no way other than word of mouth for consumers to judge doctors, innocent people go to doctors with poor track records. And you wonder why malpractice insurance is so costly?

If the information was publicly available questionable doctors would get less patients, making medical practice less profitable for them, essentially forcing them out of business. But due to "professional courtesy" they stay in business. More lawsuits, higher premiums and loss of essential services.

I'm with Vagabond on this one. I know it's joke, but it hits a little close to some of us.
A doctor's FUBAR cost me my first wife's life. He let her bleed for 18 hrs. After childbirth for Pete's sake....

And on the other hand, perhaps you could provide us with the statistics comparing the two for PURPOSEFUL deaths as opposed to Accidental. Hmmnnnnn?

I'm sure someone was keeping tabs on him. That's how they eventually built a case against him and threw his arse in jail.

He's in jail because he killed someone.

In all his previous "actions" he set the machine up and the patient flipped the switch--so they in effect killed themselves.

The one the found him guilty on he was the one that flipped the switch (on 60 Minutes no less) and as such killed his patient.

No matter if you believe assisted suicide is moral or not he was convicted for the last one because it wasn't a suicide, it was a homocide.

The statistic would still be relatively small, but mostly due to a technicality. Most people who kill others with guns do not legally own the guns.

Possibly, but Hardware's initial post makes no mention of "Legal" handgun owners, therefor it was not intended to apply to my response.

I saw a thing on TV about the doctors and trauma centers. It seems the biggest company (of I think the only 2 left that still do malpractice insurance)in the malpractice insurance business folded big time after the freaking lawyers bled the company dry by suing doctors at the drop of a hat for stupendous amounts of money.

Basically these days, anytime anybody in a doctor's care dies for any reason the doctor can expect to get sued for the crime of not being God. Since people who get taken to the emergency room are in a bad way and in dire need, they die much more often than regular hospital office patients do. And because of the rushed and often frenzied pace trauma teams have to move at to handle what comes through the door, mistakes are made more often, or at least they can more often be accused of making them.

Before that insurance company went down, trauma docs were paying something like 25-30 grand a year for insurance against being sued. Which isn't far below what I make in a year at my own job. Now they are paying 250,000+!!!! and they are quitting medicine left and right.

Trauma centers all over the country are closing from lack of staff, whole large areas are finding themselves without an emergency room within a hundred miles of where they are, and PEOPLE are literally dying from the lack of one nearby because it is literally not worth a doctor's time or aggravation anymore to work in an emergency room trying to use his skills to save lives. Hospitals just can no longer charge patients enough money to keep up with the cost of the insurance on their doctors.

Gee thank you, lawyers of America.

You know, since a Doctor is a business just like any other, he has every right in the world to refuse service to a customer.

So why don't the doctors just put together a list of every person who has sued his doctor and his lawyers too, a computer data base instantly searchable from any hospital. And when those jerks that are working so hard to destroy our hopes of adequate medical care show up all busted up and bleeding out from wrecking their mercedes and porches their names will pop up on the banned listing and the doctor can just refuse them as a customer and wish them better luck finding medical help in the next state over. I'll bet that would cure those BS lawsuits real quick.

I am not surprised at the 120,000 number, since most of will die while in the care of a doctor and our death will be due to some sort of accident and we will be pronounced dead at the nearest trauma center. And no matter what the reason we died was, there are plenty of lawyers who are happy to blame the doctor and sue him for 30 million as if he were supposed to be God himself and not just a mere human being.

And of course, since so many doctors are quitting in disgust, those who stay in the emergency room are having to work longer hours with a heavier load of patients to deal with all the time. Need I mention that tired, sleep deprived people are much more prone to making mistakes?

And on top of the all the stress and frustration, most of what they make is going to the IRS and the insurance, leaving the doctor who can save my life with little more spending money than I have myself. He went to college and medical school for about a decade just get screwed like that? No wonder they're quitting. They can work for the post office like me and live a much less stressfull life with more free time too.

Before we can get better standards for doctors, we need to stop the lawyers that are smelling the money and walking away with truckloads of it at the expence of the rest of us. And we better do it before it kills us or somebody close.
