There is a slight difference between the two. The A config (along with the Prime) are meant as protection for command lances. They make it harder for the commnader to be attacked by way of Arrow IV, TC or other "specialty weapons. And they also find units hidden for an ambush, unless they are ECM equipped. The B config works with the other two when they find any hidden units. Its superior targeting and heavy weapons ensure better damage to its opposition. And since it can jump and fire without heat problems, it is even more deadly.
Unfortunately, this is not really a multi-purpose omni in the configs. I dug this one up from my TDB archives, so it may have been an experiment. I will have to create a few new configs and post them later.

Why are Clan scientists designing specialty machines to do tasks that are unnecessary as they are against the code of honor using formations outdated at the time of the Founder?

What happened to the other four tons of pod space on the D config?
Other than that I like the variation in the variant configurations.

For the D config there should be a ER Large Laser in the CT.
There is nothing in the honor code preventing the use of escorts. The ECM is used so that the star cannot be targeted by Arrow IV, which is honorless, and so keeps the honor code intact. And the Active Probe finds ambushes, which are honorless, and so keeps the honor code intact. The whole point of this mech is to keep the honor code intact. If the commander is offered one-on-one combat then the ECM's will be turned off, unless the commnder has an ECM, in which case it makes little difference.
