Ok, evil DMs out there...this is for you. What trap got the most use and laughs from your players. What's the one they talk about when they relive past adventures?
This one is mine:
At the bottome of the rough hewn stone steps that lead to level 1 of the dungeon, there is a sign. It is magical, and even if you don't read, you can understand what it says (sort of, keep reading).
Printed in whatever language your character reads or understands is a bold "WARNING" sign. Beneath the warning portion of the sign is EXTREMELY small type. Of course, the delver must get VERY close to the sign to read the rest of it.
As the DM, I simply held up a real "WARNING" sign, with the type written as small as I coul make it, and still be legible beneath. I refused to give it to the players, or move it in any way. Thus to read what it said, they actually had to get out of their chairs, and get real close to the sign (just like their characters would). I instructed them to read it allowed...but as soon as the first few words are read, the paper would come forward...wacking them in the face (not hard mind you...just enough to give them a start). The player's character then took 1d3 points of damage.
What did the small type say?
"This block subject to sudden movement"

Mine is the door to nowhere. The thief was always running into every door first and without looking. So we made a door to nowhere...she opens the door, runs through, an falls forever....She still could be falling......You should have seen her face...

Well by far the most assinine trap I ever was involved in was at my first TotalCon way back when it was at Clark University.
Someone opened a door and it was a trapped fake one. Out shot like 24 spears right at the whole group who stood behind it in marching order.
The kicker was that the higher your Dexterity the "more likely" you were to be hit as the DM stated that you would be "more likely" moving to dodge them, thus you would dodge right into them! D'Oh! My fighter got hit wit 4 or 5 of them.
Needless to say I've never played in a Peter Masticelli game since......

Yeah that's right! If someone would have ressurected you, you might have known what a heroic deed you accomplished!
And you wonder who I get my "Death from Above" tactics from.

A heavy tight fitting door with a big E on it. If a torch is lit you will notice the color- Blue. On the other side is a contained gas pocket......
Parties with humans are assumed to be carrying torches. These parties learn all about the big bang theory. Non-Human parties normally do not have one lit, unless they recently read a scroll or something. They typically walk right thru with some coughing and wheezing from "fumes" which do no harm if they go quickly. Suffocation is a danger if they loiter.
