For some reason, lately my mouse has been acting really weird. It either quits entirely (pointer dissapears) or starts moving extremely erattically when I touch it the slightest bit. Usually restarting fixes it, but it's happening more and more often now. It's a Gateway ball corded mouse, came right with the computer and has never given me trouble. _________________ I have the right to remain silent. Anything I say will undoubtedly incriminate me.

You mean the ones with the LED on the bottom that follow the reflection of its own light? Ugh. I hate them. I have one and every so often the screen will jump, if there is a scroll bar, and you have to bang the mouse to get it to stop. And on any odd textured surface, like wooden desks, the pointer will jump wildly if you hit just the right spot on the surface.
They do work better then "ball" mice in other respects. And they do not need cleaning (which is good).

I used to have a ball mouse,and I've tried trackballs and never liked them. But since I got a light mouse I've been happy. I think they work much better than either of the other two. _________________ "Those who beat their guns into plows will plow for those with guns..." -Thomas Jefferson

Ok, I'm going to have to get a light mouse. But could anyone who has an idea why *this* mouse isn't working well throw it out at me? I've checked the mouse for dust and checked the sensitivy and stuff, but I can't find anything.
Now, about 5 seconds ago, the trackball quit on me but the mouse is still working. I'll restart and it'll be peachy, but why does it do this in the first place?

Perhaps the cord is damaged?

The cord does have a little wear and tear, but the problem is always fixed when I restart my comp. It seems to be working well this morning though and late last night, so I don't know. I think it fixed itself, or something.

One of three things is going on;
1) You have an intermittent fault in the mouse's IC board.
2) One of the connectors is bad, either the mouse or the PC. It could also be the connector is loose.
3) Your mouse driver is failing/corrupt.
A dirty mouse will not stop Windows from loading the driver, which is what makes the pointer appear on the screen. A mouse with no ball in it will still load the driver. But unplug a PS/2 mouse and the cursor will not appear. Since the mouse cursor is there and then it disappears I think your mouse driver is crashing. If you have Norton Systemworks, try running that.

If the problem is fixed by restarting the computer, then there may be a software problem. About the only thing I could think to suggest for that is to try reinstalling the mouse's software.
Please note: I am only one step above being "computer illiterate." I know some basic tricks but that is about it. The above may or may not be the problem/work at all.

Hmmm...well, I think it was a bad connection on the PS/2, I fiddled around with that and it seems to be running fine now. As for the drivers, I don't have Systemworks and I can't see why they would suddenly die, but I'm gonna buy a nice Logitech optical mouse in a few days so I'm not too concerned. Thanks to everyone who tried to diagnose this cheap Gateway mouse

I never used my Gateway mouse, I went straight to my Optical Mouse. Don't like Ball mice....

Well, I reinstalled the drivers and it seems to be working back to normal now. Thanks for the suggestions and all, it seems I'm going to have to get an optical mouse now. One thing I'm concerned about is that my dad wants to get a cordless one because my brother has to use it left-handed. Do cordless ones function as responsivily as corded ones? _________________ I have the right to remain silent. Anything I say will undoubtedly incriminate me.
