Spike is dead...he "went out with a bang"...

Another great scene:
In episode 5 or 6 Spike faces off against Vicious in a church. He is knocked out of the big stained-glass window, but leaves a live grenade. The whole thing is a long, slow-motion scene where he remembers how he left the syndicate. After about four flashback you finally get to see the kick-@$$ explosion that blasts out the whole window (which is probably 20 ft high).

There's actually several different references. When taken together (according to the manga comic that I browsed through) it is a reference to the music style that evolved as mankind began to set foot into space. The word 'Bebop' by itself is the name of the ship Spike adn Jet use; in addition, it also fits in with the multiple music references made throughout the titles for the series- including Vicious, who is actually a reference to the late punk rocker Sid Vicious from the Sex Pistols, among many other references. 'Cowboy' has several potential meanings as well. As there is no equivalent to the cowboy in Japanese culture, the cowboy, for the, has come to represent the ultimate in being a loner and outside society. In reference to the series, the main characters can be considered 'modern-day cowboys' (anyone done that song yet, Ruger? Tesla is getting so ignored these days) due to their being bounty hunters as well as other aspects of their very nature. The 'western' part of the series is driven home by the first episode, Asteroid Blues (the entire place the episode is set on is one big version of Tijuanna, hence the name) and the bounty hunter tv show that started in episode two. (For those who didn't catch it, the host is seen in the next to last episode picking his mother up from the starport. The co-star he's referring to is the blonde.)

*Warning: Minor scene spoiler for the last episode. Nothing too major, but still slightly important.
I love the last episode. Especially the scene where Spike walks into the Red Dragon office, drops a grenade and just casually kicks it to the side.

Spike was the man. However, although the argument is that he died, some people (including me) still think that, given his track record, it is possible he made it through (He's been killed what? Twice before that?)

Kraken, you had the part about Bebop being the name of the ship, and the "Cowboy" reference is easy if you listen. In the show "Cowboy" is the common term for a bounty hunter.

It was Episode 5, "Ballad of Fallen Angels," which happens to be one of my favorites. I collect Bebop paraphenalia - I even have a little figure of Spike in front of my computer. He's got his gun and cigarette, and is standing in front of the rose in the puddle (which appears in many of the flashbacks... oh, just watch the show!).
I love the theme song, Tank!. A cookie to whoever tells me the band that did that song (I already know, I'm just seeing if any of you are as psycho about the show as I am). _________________ "No time for love, Dr. Jones!"

It's a no-brainer. Both bands are mentioned in their respective credit sequences, IIRC. The one who did the opening credit song is Seat Belts. I'll have to check the end credits.

The song is done by a band called "The Seat belts" (or just "Seat belts"). Yes, I am fanatical about that show.
How about this. In the episode called "Heavy Metal Queen", what are the initials of the Heavy Metal Queen that everyone tries to guess? Extra points if you include the name (I am not sure how it is spelled though).

The word Bebop in the title is a refance the the Jazz style music that they play throughout the show. Many of the episode Titles are refrances to Songs from several different genre.
All in all I loved the series, the music was great, the action was even better, and I see a lot of myself in Spike.
As for if Spike is dead, I'd say that he is since Julia died in the second to last Episode. Someone brought up the point that he has lived through a LOT but with Julia dead he had nothing more to live for.

Jet and Faye. By the end, the suggestion was made that Faye had replaced Julia and Jet had replaced Vicious; however, Spike still had his final showdown to do.

The thing being that Spike is akin to the 47 Ronin...after they took their vengeance, they committed seppuku (IIRC)...only I believe that Spike was killed while achieving his vengeance...
Besides, with one eye always seeing the past, half of him truly did have nothing to live for once his vengeance was done...
And I still like the idea of Spike "going out with a bang"...it just fits him so well...
