Almost forgot to mention this...
Went to BJs Wholesale Club after work today to pick up some hot sausage and hamburger when I stumbled into a new Clancy "Jack Ryan" hardcover. I wasn't expecting it for a couple months so I was pleasantly surprised.
A review will follow when I'm finished.

I picked it up at Walmart the other night. It is Jack Ryan again, but right after Patriot Games and before Red October. IT started out with him just arriving in London to start work as a CIA analyst at the embassy there in the early 80s when Leonid Breshnev was real old and failing of health. And the Pope just threatened to resign his job and move back to Poland if the Russians don't back off from oppressing the Polish Solidarity movement. So Yuri Andropov (not yet the bossman) decides the Pope has to die. And of course Jack Ryan plays a central role in foiling all of that.
It reads interesting so far, and no I haven't given anything away. You can get that much off of the notes on the leaves of the cover.
I was real surprised to see another Jack Ryan novel. I had thought Clancy had written Ryan into a corner after President Jack saved Russia and whipped China, no more great enemies or events left to be done. But it seems Clancy found a little space in Ryan's life for one more book.

I still enjoy reading his works. I really wish he would continue along the "Rainbow/Chavez" lines, and it seems now like it's the only thing he can do besides creating another character or doing nonfiction works like he has been.

I just now finished Red Rabbit and Clancy has still got game. It was definetly worth the hardcover price. And seeing him go back in time to give me another Jack Ryan readathon gives me some hope that he can find a spot in Ryan's life to do that again.
I too would love to see another Rainbow book. But just which terrorists have they not yet killed? Maybe sic them on Louis Farrakhan? A bunch of menacing Amish types?
Better yet, they're back for Rainbow Seven and this time they're going to nail Barbara Streisand and Jane Fonda both. _________________ "Those who beat their guns into plows will plow for those with guns..." -Thomas Jefferson

They are old enemies, but the cold war was only between us and the Russians. Even a lot of the Russian commies are still around and in Russia there has been some concern that they may make a comeback and return to power due to economy problems.
The other enemies have been around just as long as the Soviet Union and are still around. The leaders of Red China are still just as much religios fanatics about communism as Bin Ladin is a fanatic about Islam. And the growing numbers of Gaia worshipping tree huggers have become less rational, not more rational since the cold war ended. Ever hear of the Earth Liberation Front? Homegrown terrorist group that uses arson to destroy homes and building projects, caused millions if not billions in damage. Not to mention a number of dead people that have been murdered by eco groups so far.
The tree huggers growth and increased violence coincided with the cold war's end. The sort of people who were disposed to be commie lovers here in the free world found themselves without a spiritual home so they had to find a new one. And overnight the ranks of fanatic tree huggers and health nazis increased as those would-be commies found themselves something else to be crazy about.
An old enemy is one that may still hate you, but can no longer hurt you. The enemies Clancy writes about are alive and well and both capable and willing to hurt us any way they think they can get away with it. _________________ "Those who beat their guns into plows will plow for those with guns..." -Thomas Jefferson
