I am looking for info on the Orion Drive that was purposed by NASA back in the 60/70s.
The one where you toss a nuke out the back of the spaceship and the set it off and use the enegery release to move the ship...does anyone have a webpage or know of a book that goes into detail on this?
IF so could you please share it?
Thanks!

The History Channel did a spot on this project. They showed archival film of a model made to fly by dropping small (chemical) explosive charges behind it's thrust plate.

I remember seeing part of that a while back...

How fesiable do any of you think this idea would be for BT?
By fesiable I mean as different form of propulsion for Dropships in the game...
Or are there better ideas out there?

Feasible? Well, it would work, but why would you? These sort of spacecraft can't re-enter the atmosphere and return to orbit. Dropships can. The B'tech universe already has fusion drives, so why use fission propulsion? As far as interplanetary travel, you'd be talking about a generation ship, which might be more sensible for something launched before the advent of the K-F drive for jumpships. Besides, the side effect of a launch is to flatten everything for a mile AND leave behind fallout.
Not very feasible for widespread use I'd say.

I was thinking that this would be a low tech answer for one of the really dirty poor Periphery worlds or a forgotten colony etc...
Or maybe someone runs across one of these ships while exploring...things like that...

Eric, if you are really interested in the subject, search for this book at amazon.com
"Spaceflight for Sci-Fi Writers" by Ben Bova
I read my book at my university library and I can tell you it's awesome

That really doesn't make sene. You're looking for a cheap system for DropShip propulsion, but you want to use a system based on using nuclear weapon detonations. A system that uses an extremely resource intensive drive system, rather than just diatomic hydrogen.
Really the only thing I can think of that would be cheaper than a fusion-thrust system would be solar sails catching the solar wind. But that doesn't work that well coming back, even if you do tack.

The Orion ships are cheaper then dropships...and use something most folks would be happy to see go away in this peaceful manner.

Peaceful manner, yes. Just as long as it stays the hell away from my atmosphere

I agree Hardware. I like the Ideas of using an Ion Drive or Gravilitic anomalation to move ships through space....
