You're a Paladin of Tyr. You are going through a dungeon when you come across a room with an unconscious figure on the floor and a treasure chest in the corner. Upon closer inspection, the unconscious being on the floor is a drow wearing studded leather armor (note: it is NOT Drizzt Do'Urden). You detect evil in the room.

What do you do? Please explain your answer.

What alignment is the Paladin?

If they are of good alignmnet:
Do a spot check on the room. If I see nothing. Check the Drow to see if he is alive. If dead. try to determen what kill it

If alive. bind him and cure him

But I am very careful about the chest. I never turn my back on it.

The reason
The spot is easy to figure out.
As is to what killed the drow

I cured him to find out what attacked him. I watch the chest because it might be a Mimic.

Paladins are only Lawful Good, the drow is alive, and as I said he was just unconscious.

BTW, you passed the test--the drow is of good alignment, and is a surface drow who was jumped while on an expedition and dumped in this room. The evil is coming from the chest in the corner--which is a mimic that is currently (fortunately for you both) not hungry. (In the 3rd Ed monster manual, mimics aren't considered evil--but I go by the second ed entry for Killer Mimics, which *are* evil)

This scenario is one that I'm going to suggest to a buddy of mine in North Dakota that's got a player in his D&D campaign that doesn't have the foggiest idea of how to play a Paladin. Basically he acts like an NG(C) fighter/rogue but wants the Paladin bennies.

So, I devised this little test for Keith to spring on him. If he passes he's still a Paladin. If he fails (kills the Drow--which is what will probably happen), then Tyr yanks his powers and he is no longer a Paladin (at which point the player will be encouraged to find another campaign if he whines overmuch).

Doesn't 3ED have Lawful Evil Paladins?

I forgot to ask how big the room was. Becasue mimic's do not have a range attacks that I know of.

But I guess it does not matter. since I passed.

Yeah me

I don't know the 3rd rules at all, but in 2nd the Palidan would know that the drow was not evil and the treasure chest is evil (because it's actually a creature) because the Palidan's ability to detect evil is by creature in a 60' radius.

In 3rd Ed it functions as the spell--you can't tell where the evil specifically is unless you concentrate for a round.

Also, Paladins are only LG, even in 3rd Ed. LE "Paladins" are Blackguards.

OK. that answers my questions.

Is the blackguards listed in the Monster manual?

Prestige class. They're listed in the Dungeon Master's Guide.

And as chihawk said--in 2nd Ed the Pally would definitely know who was radiating evil. However, this Paladin doesn't bother to ask where the evil is coming from half the time.

Or if he knows he even can. Alot of players that play classes just for the bennies. know next to nothing besides those.

Drac-boy is one of them.

I have never played a Paladin. So it is pretty sad that I know what to do. The guy must be a powergamer. The famous Hack & Slash mentally.

I actually enjoy playing Paladins.. They can be a VERY fun Roleplaying class if you enjoy that sort of thing.

My Paladin being Drow herself would have dragged the unconsious one to the far corner away from the chest, then done a detect evil on both (The area, concentrating).. If nothing evil showed, she would stabilize the unconsious one, then tie him up and sit and wait for him to awaken.. watching the chest closely.

Oh, they ARE! I played my first Paladin in a campaign that just finished last week--a friend of mine had a campaign set in Europe after the fall of the Western Roman Empire. I was a Jewish Paladin. It was an absolute blast!

Paladins are great if you play them wisely and don't automatically assume that anyone who is evil (or seems evil) needs to die on the spot--after all, they're Lawful Good not Lawful Stupid or Lawful Arsehole.
