how many here really play games where salvage, repair, and role-playing are factors?

Yeah, about15 years ago when we first started playing mechwarrior. We captured a mint Assassin and thought we were in heaven! Then Hardware (who ran the campaign) mauled our lance with a pair of Archers....ouch.

I do, totally.

I run a campaign of about six players. The game is confined to one continent on a planet, and all of the mech, vehicle, and support units on the continent are decided upon at the outset. For one side, resupply is rare. For the other side, there IS NO RESUPPLY. So for everyone involved, conservation of ammo is important, and salvage is key. Totally changes the game when you calculate your to hit number, come up with a 'nine', and then look down and see your LRM-20 is down to 2 salvos (and there ain't no more back at your command center).

I run a merc unit. Salavge and cost are very important in my games. No point winning the battle if it puts you in the hole financially.

I too run a Merc unit. I've always worried about resupply, and if you look at my TO&E on my website, you'll notice a strong support element, (my unit is modeled after a Canadian Army Brigade Group, and I tried to stick as close to our doctrine TO&E as possible, although BattleMechs aren't issued to the Canadians yet! )

Well, I do run a small merc unit, and a friend does the same. For those the salvage and repairs are important. We don`t really have time for very much of the RPG, so we usually leave it out. Careful recon is a must, as is always trying for local numerical superiority.

It`s satisfying to collect a big honking force and clobber each other senseless once in a while, too. This weekend we played the Monte Diablo scenario, which was fun

well its all good. but salvage is key. i'm speaking from a merc's perspective too.

you don't want to engage in a battle you are doubtful that you will win.
you want to be the victor. that way, everything the other side loses, you gain.

winning the fight as merc is very important.
use artillery.

good salvage and supply make or break any unit. being able to best use you assets is critical for a mercenary unit.

I have seen merc units win quite handily on the battle field and ingnore salvage. They soon start having cash flow problems trying to keep their equipment in shape buy the best parts.

I have seen semi-decent units do well because they always gang up, and salvage. less damage per mech, plus they get a lot of parts to sell to get good parts. less dammage per mech also means only cheap armor is lost rather than actuators and other more expensive stuff.

Heck, even The Circus with it munch tech, still does salvage. Salvage can be resold to help pay for maintenance cash, even though a lot of the "old" tech is simply unusable on the more advanced mechs. The basics are still the same tho' bones, muscles, armor, engine shielding, electronics all generally provides some sort of salvage for use. ERLasers and regular lasers might present problems, but all and all $$$$ can be saved with salvage. If worse happens a regular tech part is better than NO part, right?

Yeah, it's still funny to watch Horhiro and his brother twitch when I use the word LAM around them.

Salvage is the key to a Btech/Mechwarrior campaign. Especially with small units.

Going hand in hand with that though is salvage denial tactics. That Wolverine down for the count? Good, keep firing until the center torso is slag, deny the opposition the ability to someday be able to return the mech to service. A couple of anti-personnel mines artfully concealed on a salvage battlefield can deny your opponent a few technicians. Parts don't matter much if you ain't got the skill to install them.

Also remember time to use repair times. Time to repair can be critically important in a campaign. it can be the difference between going out with a full lance and going into battle short and with damaged mechs.

Repair time can be crucial. The Circus uses special salvage teams called The Junkyard Dogs. They carry a tech kit in one hand and a blazer in the other, and will fight for downed mechs with all comers. They are trained as infantry, then their mos school id for various technical skills.

while not using the complete MW rules in a campaign game...i use some stuff from the merc FM, and a lil bit of MW crap so our players can advance in skills
