HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - Warner Bros. Pictures will produce a live-action, English-language remake of Japan's anime classic "Akira."

Director Stephen Norrington, who has just wrapped superhero drama "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen," has reteamed with "League" screenwriter James Robinson to develop the project.

Released in 1988, "Akira" was the brainchild of Katsuhiro Otomo, who directed the film and wrote the comic from which it stemmed. The remake will tell the story of a bike gang leader who must rescue his younger

brother from his involvement in Akira, a secret government project. In the process, the biker must do battle with anti-government activists, greedy politicians and irresponsible scientists.

Robinson told Daily Variety that he came to the project after Norrington had been developing the idea with Warners execs Lionel

Wigram and Dan Lin, but had yet to find a take they liked.

"I've been a fan of the anime for many years and understood which elements would have to be brought to a live-action translation of it," Robinson told Daily Variety. "I've tried to retain as many iconic elements of the anime as possible."

Robinson, who also wrote and directed "Comic Book Villains" for Lions Gate, is now fine-tuning a producer's draft.

"League," set in a version of Victorian-era England where fictional characters like Dr. Jekyll, Capt. Nemo and Allan Quartermain band

together to fight crime for the Queen, is scheduled for a summer 2003 release via Twentieth Century Fox.

Let's just hope that it doesn't get screwed up like a lot of the other recent 'cartoon to live-action' movies did.

And let's hope that it makes it into theatres before the rumored live-action DBZ movie.

All that I know is that a few months back, animenation.com reprted that 21st Century Fox got the rights to produce a live-action DBZ movie.

Why DBZ, I don't know. I know that there is a live-action Iria floating around. I also know that there are tons of anime more deserving of live-action films than DBZ. (I'd say The Slayers but a lot of the jokes are dependant upon it being an animation to come off correctly.)I would pay full admission to see a live-action Armored Trooper: VOTOMS if someone did it right.

Not a Rumor for DBZ Live Action...its real. And the reason its gonna be made is cause it has the largest fan base of all anime in America.

Remember...comapnies dont make stuff for fans, its all for money.

Now...from what I have heard Gundam G-Savior sucked in terms of acting and the live action part...but was really cool for the full out CGI effects.

And a live action Iria Zeriam, two live action Guyver films, G-Saviour, etc.

In rare occasions, it can be. The Scooby-Doo movie was good, but definately not for young kids.

I just would like to see a love action Robotech.

As far as DBZ I really like the anime but I missed 3 episodes and I swear I missed 3 seasons worth of programing. So I stopped watching. But I think they should leave Akira alon. I bought the DVD version and was really disapointed. They had re-recorded all of the voices and re-written what was a wonderful script, I was really disapointed.

Hmm...porn based on Robotech...so, are you interested in the Rick/Lisa/Minmay love triangle, the Dana/Zor thing, or the Scott/Marlene (Ariel) thing...or possibly those of some of the side characters, like the Roy/Claudia thing, the Max/Miria thing, the "Bridge Bunnies"/Zentreadi Spies thing, or the Lancer/Sera thing?

Sorry...coudn't resist...

I'd really like to see a CGI armored core movie....hell, they've already made about an hours worth of *FF:Spirits-quality* footage in the games already, so it can't be that bad. I'm already doing fanfiction for it, so plot can't be that hard to come by. But, damn staight, I would pay full admission to see that the day it came out.
