Type: MSY-1S Wolf Submarine
Tonnage: 10
Movement Type: Submarine
Power Plant: GM 70 ICE
Cruising Speed: 76 KPH
Maximum Speed: 119 KPH
Armor: StarSlab/1
Armament:
~1 Piepsk Weapons Group 6 Short Range Torpedo System
Manufacturer: Moscow Ship Yards
~Primary Factory: Bryant
Communications Systems: WolfTalk 1300
Targeting and Tracking System: Star Tracker Sonar
Overview:
Named for the devestating submarine tactic of World War II, the Wolf
Submarine attempts to do the opposite of Russian Naval thinking: build
small and deadly. The desingers at the Moscow Ship Yards had decided
that a special fast moving scout/raider would be needed on many worlds
for the defense of naval instilations as well as to defend and resuply
troops. This is where the Wolf comes in.
At first the Wolf was conceived as a long range attack unit, able to
disrupt the smuggling and pirating in the South Reaches Archipeligo,
where the Cappellen funded insurgants had fled to after their
defeat by Russian hands. A number of cheap prototypes were built,
and were used to great affect. With just one problem, they ran out of
ammunition quickly and were hard to resupply. In responce half of the
submarines that were waiting for last minute checks and fittings were
taken and had their SRT systems striped out and instead the area was
closed off from the water and turned into a modified cargo hold. This
version of the Wolf would become known as the Mule and could carry
almost four tons of cargo and equipment. As Wolf Packs of 12 subs
and Mule Trains of 12 were deployed, it became evident that the cheap
deadly Wolf and its cargo hauling brother would inable the Russians
to control the seas.
Capabilities:
By itself a single Wolf is hardly a threat to a shipping lane or even
to a lone smuggler. Most smugglers use Sea Skimmer hyrdofoils or
modified cargo haulers both of which can move fast enough to easily
outdistance the Wolf. However in a group of 12, known as a Wolf Pack,
the Wolf becomes a severe threat. Approaching from a depth of 100 to
125 meters, the Wolf is completely unable to be detected by enemy ships
and can fire from below or surround the ship before it can escape. No
ship would be able to survive the beating a group of 12 Wolf's could
inflict at such a short range, and ships sometimes just surrender at
once when they see a single Wolf submarine, afraid that the rest of
the pack lurks somewhere below.
The other tactic that is seeing popularity among the Wolf crews is that
of using the mules to lay a mine field, and then sending four Wolves
to go and scare a smuggler convoy or ship into the field. As the
heavy ship sinks the other Wolves converg on the ship to rescue
survivors and cargo. Known as the Wolf Bark tactic, this can be
especially deadly in crowded bays or channels, sometimes resulting in
a massive sinking as smugglers attempt to flee the navy presence.
In and of itself the Wolf is an attempt by Russian engineers to make
a submarine that could control the ocean and waterways without any
support. High speeds and a small profile add to the survivability of
the Wolf, although the armor plating is fairly thin. One major
advantage is that few units are equiped to deal with underwater combat,
and the Wolf is able to simply sit back and out manuver those who are.
Although ships like the Neptune Submarine and Monitor Naval Vessel
have become widespread in the Inner Sphere, the Russians fully stand
by their Wolf Submarine, and insist that the light weight ship is fully
able to withstand the rigors of combat, and do a better job of it, then
its heavier cousins.
Deployment:
Although the Wolf has been approved for export, it is still only
deployed with the Russian Navy. Based around the Underwater C3 station
used to coordinate the planets defenses, their is always at least
three Wolf Packs in the area. Due to the loose organizational and
highly indepdentent nature of the Wolf Packs, it is uncertain just how
many there are currently on Bryant, although some conservitive
estimates say no more then 300. It should be noted that the Russian
government has a habit of releasing press releases a long time after
the development of a weapon, and that new weapons are hardly new.
Varients:
The only known varient, other then the Mule Submarine, is the MSY-2S
Beagle Submarine. Used primarily by the Russian Coast Guard, the
Beagle is a patrol boat, and uses a Piepsk Weapons Group 2 Short
Range Torpedo system, as well as a Piepsk Manhunter MMG. The Beagle
can also carry 1 squad of marines or a ton of cargo. Used by the
Coast Guard for patrol, searches, and guard duty, the Beagle usually
opperates on the surface, but can dive at a moments notice. Beagles
usually travel in packs of four, and if Beagles are present, either
Mules, a Wolf Pack, or some other type of craft can be expected to be
harboring nearby. Beagles, with their machine gun, are often used to
clear landing sites for other craft, such as Mules, and can guard an
unloading from guirilla attack.

Make me think of the fleet submarine of US Navy in WW2, I see a SRM 6 fore and a SRM4 aft :0). Sure wish they could use Streak package for torpedoes. _________________

Nah, probably more like three SRM 2s front and one SRM 2 aft. That way you only have to carry one ammo type.

Actually thats 3 SRM-2 fore and >2< SRM-2 aft. Most of the fleet submarines of the US Navy in WW2 had 6 torpedo tubes fore and 4 torpedo tubes aft. _________________
