Recently I've been trying to find 'Mechs for our new fourth battalion, the last bit of our RCT to come together. I've hoped that I can create a sort of commando unit from them, capable of field action, assassination (god forbid), behind the lines raiding and anything else really. Stand up fights are the only thing I'm not really worried about.

Here's the list of 'Mechs I intend to use:

General Purpose: ENF-7D Enforcer III

Close Assault: HCT-6D Hatchetman

Fire Support: VLK-QD Valkyrie

Anti-Infantry: WSP-1D Wasp

I'm somewhat dissapointed with the Hatchetman design, because of it's XL engine. But, if I minimize the exposure to fire, it should work well enough. Feel free to make suggestions. I've been trying to keep all 'Mechs under 55-tons and with at least a 5/8/5 movement curve. I'll certainly take suggestions though.

I'd keep the minimum move to 6/9/6 and emphasize energy weapons or low ammo requirement systems like MG's and SRM2's or streaks.

That Enforcer and Hatchetman are good designs, but slow and the AC10's just run out of ammo too quick.

Remember, light designs for raiding and harrassment aren't supposed to slug it out. Go with older tech to reduce heat, I.E. ppc's versus erppc's.

They're going to be outclassed by almost any mech that shows up to fight them, that would be the time to run. Also, stay with jumpers if at all possible. Survival could be a river or canyon away.

I happen to think "fourth battalion" sounds a tad munchy for a merc battalion that's not canon.

But to each his own....

Too many Davion 'Mechs for my tastes, but...

Anyways...instead of the Davion variant Hatchetman, you might consider the Nightsky instead...there are many variant models, including one with an ER PPC instead of the LPL...it moves 6/9/6, has the hatchet, and has an all energy weapon loadout...perhaps a tad bit better for a "commando" 'Mech...

And ditch the Enforcer immediately! It hasn`t got even the single hand actuator the Valkyrie was given! What the hell use is a "commando" mech that can`t pick up stuff? Buy old Phoenix Hawks instead and do some customizing work on them...My own little unit, Harper`s Hunters, came up with a reasonable variant. Switch the engine for one with DHS, drop both MGs for two additional MLs. Nasty close-in fighter. I`ll leave slaughtering infantry for the light mechs, ie Stingers.

Ach yes, the Stingers...I always buy Stingers over Wasps since I hate SRM-2 launchers. Inferno ammo is funny, but you`ll get a reputation for cruelty if you use it on poor bloody infantry.

We were never a battalion, and we're a Davion (short) RCT now, Chihawk. 'Course, that's prolly munchier. But in the end, I always use equal forces in my games. And usually only from my 17th Recon at that. So in my mind, where I'm from, and how big my unit is, only has an impact on fiction.

It also explains why they're all Davion 'Mechs for those who noticed. As for SRM-2s, that Wasp carries a flamer for infantry, and this battalion should not be seen or heard if you get my drift...

I won't drop the Enforcer, but I will get another medium with hands, and the Phoenix Hawk sounds good.

Yes, while machine gunning them to death is considered right and proper.

Seriously, at least one mech should have machine guns. And I completely forgot about hand actuators. Two on each mech if possible.

Personally, I LOVE the J Edgar. Fast, enough armor to take a few hits, And three weapons on a turret. Very useful indeed.

Am I the only one who was confused with the "Assault Mech: Hatchetman" and then the line "If I minimize its exposure to fire it should be fine." How do you minimize a units exposure that is getting up close and personal? I mean last time I checked most enemy units will fight back..

Go with old tech wherever you can. Fast, cheap, and untraceable.

Actually, I was going to use the Nightsky. Then I looked at the price tag. So I went back to my old Hatchetman and looked at the price tag. I'm not on THAT good of terms with the DQ. The revised list is a bit different.

Heavy Hitter: ENF-7D Enforcer III
General Purpose: PXH-1D Phoenix Hawk
Fire Support: VLK-QD Valkyrie
Close Assault: JVN-10F Javelin
Anti-Infantry: WSP-2D Wasp

It's mostly older tech, and not that bad on the FedSuns treasury. Two of the above are refits. In the case of the ENF-7D, it's cheaper than the original, and with the WSP-2D it's only about 100G more.

ENF-7D: Light Engine, LBX10
WSP-2D: Light Engine, Endo-Steel, MG, More Armor, CASE

Have a look at the website. It has a table which shows which vehicles we use. We do use J. Edgars too.
