I just created an NPC for a campaign that I'm running. Said NPC is a second-level fighter with Rapid Shot, Precise Shot, Pointblank Shot, and Exotic Weapons Proficiency: Repeating Crossbow.
What I'm wondering is if it would be worth it (and justified) to say that his repeating crossbow is jury-rigged for a belt-feeding system.

A better question is "Why & how would this NPC have this equipment at his current level?"
If you can logically answer that question then there's no reason for him not to.

I'd have to say no. It is just not feasible with any type of bow, the fletching gets in the way or it would be destroyed by the belt as it passes through it. Its been a while since I looked at the repeating crossbow for 3rd Edition, but a clip system is much more practical.

Yes, the only repeat fire crossbow I know of was invented by the Chinese. It uses a big clip. I think it's called a Chu Ko Nu.

Repeating crossbow? Hell, give him an SMG and really make your campaign interesting!

SMG, shit give him a heavy repeating blaster rifle with tripod, or an e-web. that'll make it interesting.

One of the other NPCs who will eventually be introduced is a gnomish weapons crafter. And the two NPCs are both a part of the same organization.

If this is for D&D 3rd Ed, then you would have to specify the specifics of the belt system.
Otherwise, the only really good explanation is the aforementioned clip. I think the best one we got to work in a campaign succesfully had 12 bolts, and took a full action to change. _________________ Loyalty above all else except honour!

3rd ed has rules for Gnomish inventions. This covers all classes of Gnomes, even the Tinker Gnome.

The question isn't how the bot is fed into the crossbow, it's how the hell the bowstring is redrawn!
The pounds of pull on a crossbow are equivalent to the pull of a longbow, but without the mechanical advantage of effectively having a lever, in the form of the longbow's length, bending that bow to lock the string back is not an easy proposition.

Case in point, Chu Ko Nus had lousy range. The idea was that if you could close enough, it was over.

Do what I did...
have a small rotating handle on the side that catches part of the wire and draws it back using a series of gears to increase the pressure. _________________ Loyalty above all else except honour!

It`s called a winch...same as heavy x-bows have in 3rd ed. But seriously, the repeating x-bow shouldn`t have that much range, should it? It`s listed at 80 feet, same as a light x-bow.

Are you sure you really want to be asking questions for a campaign you are running when one of your players also posts here?
