I was going through some of my files on my website, and I realized I had lost my HMP file for my Hell Fire mech that I designed a long tim ago, so I went to remake it when I noticed a few things.

1) It could actually have 10.5 tons of armor, not 8.0.

2) If I made it 65 tons, it freed up an extra 3.5 tons, which could go to Armor and an ER SMALL Laser

I set out to design a cheaper replacement for the Arrow IV version of the Catapult.

Here is the Fluff text for it then the two variations of the main version, 60 tons and 65 tons. Which one is really the better mech?

Overview:
The Hell Fire is a relatively new design, though in fact it dates back to the Star League. With the success of the Catapult designers and units sought to design a fire
support mech that would have a much longer field life. The main problem with the CPLT-C3 Catapult, is the fact that it only has 1 ton of ammunition for its Arrow
IV system. Designers liked the basic design of the Catapult but wanted to keep costs down so they went with the smaller chassis, which enables the mech to carry
even more fire power, mainly in the fact that they included space for 3 tons of ammunition, instead of just one ton, like in the CPLT-C3 Catapult. Thus cutting down
on the frequency of refitting needed allowing the mech to stay in position longer and thus before efficient and effective.

Capability:
The Hell Fire is a fire support mech, in much the same role as its bigger brother the Catapult. The Hell Fire has more bang for the C-Bill then the Catapult. This is mainly due to the fact that it has room for 3 tons of ammo, rather then one. It has only slightly less armor, but makes up for that with the addition of an Extended Range Particle Projection Cannon, which it allows it to keep any enemy forces, that get to close, at bay, replacing two of the Catapults medium lasers. Overall, the Hell Fire is a very sturdy and dependable weapons platform, able to stay in position for a much longer period.

Deployment:
Though initially designed during the reign of the Star League, the Hell Fire, saw very little action. The Hell Fire barely completed its testing phases before the Amaris Coup. During the fighting the Usurper managed to infiltrate the SLDF lines and sabotage the few Hell Fires that were in use by the SLDF at the time. The Hell Fires were just ripping apart the Usurpers lines at will, and had to be stopped. The single lance belonging to the 666th Fire Support Company, single handedly broke the advance of the 742nd Mobile Strike Company, at what is now known as Hell Fire pass. These mechs were some how out flanked by the 742nd, who were now threatening to break through and reek havoc in the rear lines of the 1163rd Combat Regiment of the SLDF. As for more recent deployment, current information is sketchy at best, due to the fact that the Hell Fire is so new. Rumors say that the Mercenary battalion the Rasmey's Regulators are conducting field tests of it right now. It is also rumored that the Regulators cently came across the design and sold it Hollis Incorporated.

Variants:
So far two variants have been proposed. The 3J replaces the ERPPC with an AC/2, and one ton of ammo, thus solving the heat problem, if and when the pilots lets loose with an ALPHA Strike. The second variant is by far the most scariest. The 4J removes the ERPPC and adds 4.5 tons of Armor and two tons of homing ammo, and case to the right torso. As a result the 4J is able to stay in the field for a very long time with out need for refitting.

(I tried to getthe HTML to work, but it was being screwy, inserting huge spaces, and generally not wokring right)

HLF-2J:
Tons: 60
Moves: 4/6/4
Armor: 10.5 Armor Factor 168
Weapons:
ERPPC
2 Medium Lasers
1 Arrow IV Missle System w/ 3 tons of Armor

HLF-2AJ:
Tons: 65
Moves: 4/6/4
Armor: 13.5 Armor Factor 211
Weapons:
ERPPC
2 Medium Lasers
1 Arrow IV Missle System w/ 3 tons of Armor
1 ER Small LAser
Note: the 10th DHS is now in the engine, not floating free to be hit and knocked out.

Which of these is the better. I'm aiming for inexpensive here, as well as survivability too.

Drop the 3 points of armor that last half ton gives you on the second version and upgrade that ER small to a medium oran ER Med...

Go with the 60-ton chassis and the 4J variant. Reasons:
1) An artillery mech should always have more ammo and less secondary guns.
2) The 60-ton chassis is cheaper than the 65-ton and an ERPPC is expensive too.

Go with the 2J 60 tonner, but drop the PPC.

I reccomend an SRM4 with 1 ton of ammo and the rest of the space going to the ARROW IV ammo. If you see someone trying to close with the Hell Fires, turn all the ARROW IVs on him. If somehow he makes it within SRM range, use them to seek out and destroy his components. You may also consider swapping a MLas for a TAG system.

Yeah, it's unlikely anyone will get that close being bombarded by ARROW IV Missiles, but I've seen stranger things and I tend to group my "arty" 'Mechs into lances by themselves.

The reason behind having a backup weapon with long range capability is to allow the mech to disuade anyone from getting to close to it.

Maybe...but when you have an ARROW IV and an ERPPC, I'd take my chances with the PPC and charge him.

I presume that the TAG will spot for other units in its lance, not for itself (which is illegal)?

5J...decent compromise. I like it.

A little overgunned at short range, and a little big, but definatly as good as the Catapult.

Overgunned at Short Range: Well I don't have any more room in the RT for more Arrow IV Ammo, and I am not sure what else to add in stead of the Medium Lasers.

A little Big: the problem with makingit 60 tons, like I woul really like is that the engine hten only hold 9 heat sinks in it, with the 10th having to be added in, and thus a chance it can be destroyed. Not that it really needs the extra heat sink though.

Though I suppose I could drop it down to 60 tons and instead of an XL use a light engine and drop 1 Medium laser, TAG and 1 ton of Arrow IV ammo. It would have 9.5 tons of armor (AF = 152) Thought on this version (HLF-6J)?

Edit: Or I could leave the XL engine and either keep the Medium Tag and 1 ton of ammo or give it 12.5 tons of armor (AF = 200).

Lotta space and weight here I hadn't considered I guess. I would edit out the lasers entirely and the weight they use. But only I would really enjoy that...people usually take some form of comfort for having at least one laser to fall back on.

Losing a heatsink is not big deal. They're cheap usually. Here's what I'd do, forgive me for taking liberties with your idea, it took real effort to keep the price tag beneath the CPLT-C3:

I like it. The endo steel is probably cheaper than the XL or Light Engine. Equipment wise, it is similiar to mine, though I kept the Lower Arm and Hand Actuators in the LA and the Hand Actuator in the RA.
