For some reason, I was just wondering what everyone's opinions on LARPing (Live Action Role Playing) are. And I don't mean any game in particular, just the concept in general. I'm sure some of you are wondering why I'm asking this, I'll tell after I get a few responses.

Seeing that I have seen only two type of LARP, one being Amber and the other being White Wolf's Vampire game...I can't say that I am impressed, either the groups pick the most public of places to play their games, thus ensuring that they have an audience and then they wonder WHY some folks get nervous and call the cops...OR they get so into their 'acting' that they can't sperate it from real life.
So on the whole it might be fun for a one time thing, but given that it can get out of hand, it's not something I would readily endorse.
But that's my opinion on the matter.

in the words of the horse from Ren and Stimpy...
"No, sir...I dont think I like it"
Then again...I have never been into any real RPG-ing...and like Ren Faires...I think its kinda childish.
Thats just MY opinion though

I`ve only participated in state-sponsored LARPs, also known as reserve training You get to play the part of a soldier and spend time in the forest together with your group/platoon. The best part is usually meal time.

Not a real big fan of LARPers. The only ones I've run into have been at TotalCon, and they make a lot of noise. One was a BTech player and he was very nice though.
Not having ever been in the drama club or such, I guess I would prefer to play wargames and RPGs.
All in all I can't honestly say I don't like these people as I don't know them or their games very well.

i generally stear away from people like this.....
role playing a part at like a ren fair or a job is one thing, but playing characters in a game is another.
the lines between whats real and fiction tends to get blurred.... creating some bad situations.

Well, I've done both. I'm a Medieval Re-Enactor, and I've been LARPing before. They are two different animals. I love being a Re-Enactor, it's fun and you learn about History...
LARPing is a game. I don't like being a Player. You don't get enough sleep, food or stimuli. The next time I'm going as one of the Monster Corps. The DM's of said game. I like it better, you get better food and sleep. I guess it's because I've DMing for over twenty years.....
They're fighting style is based on speed and how many special attacks/Defences you have. My style is from years of actual combat. In the tourney I was in, it was a three point rule. I hit my Opponent Nine times, and he had seven special dodges/parries. It was depressing, outclassing him and lossing anyway...
I could go on, but.....Time is against us....

IMHO, LARPing isn't that great an idea. From what I have seen and heard, a lot of those who do LARP take it to the extreme. At the least, this results in some sort of injury and a possible mental screening. At worst, we get examples like some college kids who LARPed into some steam tunnels. Either way, the gaming world doesn't need more damage to deal with.

Urban legend. Actually it`s not even a RPG legend but a college legend at least to begin with. College students have this odd idea that steam tunnels under the campus area could be used as 'secret passages' in order to move about between buildings. It became connected with RPGs when a student disappeared. Apparently someone believed they used to play D&D in the steam tunnels? Pen-and-paper D&D no less...

And NO, I`m not bothering to read through it all right now just to provide you with the right passage.
