Overview:
The Kiev Class Carrier produced by the Moscow Ship Yards on Bryant is one of the most forward thinking vehicle designs to have been deployed in years. Ammazingly massive, Russian Engineers seemed to have done some major leaps in thinking in order to produce what might be the lightest aerospace carrying unit ever designed. The most ammazing thing about the design, however, is that it breaks no new technology barriers, and is actually a fairly cheap unit, for its size.

The price to outfit a small carrier group is about the same as fielding a company of BattleMechs and their necessary support equipment. Throw in the price for Dropship transport, and the cost of fielding a BattleMech company begins to grow far beyond the small carrier group costs.

Capabilities:
The Kiev is an ammazing weapon in the Russian aresnal because its capabilities are so vast. Able to hold within its deck 40 tons of air units, whether VTOL or Fighter, and a further 20 tons on its deck, the Kiev has the ability to become a very important center for fighter operations. It accomplishes this with the modification of a number of technologies. The first technology is easily understood. For a launch deck, the Russians simply placed a heavy duty bridge on top of the front of the ship. Although it expands out over the hull a bit, and is at an angle, this allows the ship to support almost any VSTOL or VTOL capable unit. A lift platform can lift planes from below deck to the surface of the ship. The third plane or helicopters beyond the 40 ton bay are usually kept on the lift platform, mostly because it is easier to strap them down.

To assist in take offs a launch catapult was installed. Powered by a strong steam jet, the launch catapult can help a VSTOL plane with its engine opperating at full power to launch off the short runway. It has also been fitted with a strong metal bar that can be extended to go the length of the deck. When a plane comes in for a landing the tailhook catches the bar and the steam is vented in the opposite direction to counter the speed of the plane, allowing the plane to land on such a short space. The tail hook is a part of the VSTOL equipment on Russian planes. A strong mesh can also be deployed under the end of the runway so that if a plane does fail in take off, has to much speed on landing, or some other emergency crops up and the plane goes over the edge, it can be caught in the netting. This is a highly dangerous manuver however, and can lead to damage to the ship and plane.

To support the planes a ten ton cargo bay carrying spare equipment, fuel, and ammunition is attached to the plane's cargo bay. Near this is also a location for the pilots and technicians to relax and recoup on longer missions. These locations can be expanded as needed. Many pilots have been very impressed with the facilities on a Kiev Carrier, which allow for the pilots to be briefed, suit up, and relax all in the same area. The Beta configuration has been seriously expanded to include infantry units, and because of this most Beta Kiev Carriers carry infantry support helicopters, rather then fighters

The crew of the Kiev, lives and works mostly in the control tower. Here a powerful Mobile HQ, one of the most advanced available to the Russians has been set up to allow for air control, and also battle coordination. When an experienced commander is on the deck, the Kiev can litterly dictate battles happening kilometers away. This has made it a prime target during warfare however.

Deployment:
A Kiev Class Carrier is never deployed alone. This isn't even counting its limited fighter or VTOL support. Wolf Submarine packs, surface gun and missile ships are the most common escorts, as are BattleShips of up to 400 tons. Designed to work with groups, Kiev Class Carriers are slightly mobile command stations, that are heavily guarded and can usually only be attacked from aerospace assets. Because of their defenses though, Aerospace units are hard pressed to sink a Kiev, and usually end up die trying.

Another thing I noticed while compiling my files. Which weapons are in the fore turret and in the aft turret?

Edit: Also, I seem to have 5 more tons of pod space than you do...

having designed a ship after this on....

the forward turret represents the carrier deck, while the second turret represents the weapons turret.
