Okay I picked this up and NO I did not pay the outrageous price that is being asked for it. I paid $20 for it.
First off the price increase is crazy, this is suppose to be the starting point for new players, but yet at $34.99 that is alone is going turn most folks away and given that it's aimed at the SAME AGE GROUP as MWDA, the parents, who are the ones buying these games for the under 16 crowd, will not be looking to drop $35 dollars on a board/miniatures game.
This increase in price is going to really hurt the sales of the box set. There are NO Unseen in there...can't wait to see the ones who do start through the Box Set wonder why they don't have the PP mechs...
Given that this is a late product, where is the super fancy art that Randal talked about in one of his Battlechats as one of the reasons the box set was dealyed? I didn't see it.
The maps to play on look nice, and the counters are good, now I could understand the $34.99 price if they box had plastic mechs in it, but not for cardboard mechs.
The quickplay rules are nice, and do allow for faster learning of the game, this gives the incoming players more chances to get the feel of the game.
The new IS map is nice, but it's NOT worth it to buy the box set just to get the map and no I didn't buy it for the map, I decided to buy it so as I could use it to teach others to play.
Over all the box set isn't bad, the price is too high though for what you get and it should have been down around what the other BT Box Sets where $15-25 dollars with average for the starting box set being $20. It shold not be an almost 50% increase in price since that will push folks over to other less expensive games.
So on a scale A-F, I give this one a C.

Look at what most new board games cost now...compare it to that and maybe the price isn't that bad.
Plus there are so many places online that discount the price of games by as much as 25% or more it's easy not to pay full retail.

I haven't seen any games that cost that much in a while, and I buy from this little toystore near my house which pratically doubles the price on everything. Actually I'm looking for a board game for my neice that is simple, can be played by an 8 year old, but will get her into war gaming. Suggestions are welcome!

I looked at Risk, but I don't think she'll like it. I'll take a look at Stratego.
Raven, who will buy his niece a present this weekend, he promises!

That used to be my favorite game as a kid... don't know where it vanished to. And, for expensive games, check this out. I saw a copy of a new Risk game (Risk 2150 or something like that?) for almost $80 Cdn, (so $55-60 US). Compared to that, BTech is a bargain!

I own Risk 2210 AD...not sure what I paid but I'm sure it wasn't much more than $40.

I get a 25% discount on the games I purchase at my FLGS (everyone gets 15% off, but I'm special )....I'd tell you what the retail was on it but it's the bottom game in a stack and I'm too lazy to move them all.

The New Stratego is called Legends and is in the new cool looking AH boxes, like Risk 2240 and Aquire. IT plays a little differently, but I got it for the future with my son. We had a Wizards of the Coast store go under and I went bezerk for kids games..... and one for myself.
As for the Box set. $35 is a little too high, $30 is right in the going range. Karagin I think you missed the mark, look how much the parents are plunking doen for click a mech.... $15 a starter, $7 for a booster? My prices may be off but it does not take long. Heck look at all the card games. Plus if that extra $5 means that Battletech will remain afloat, fne.
AWAD- really waiting on the terrain version

Most places are $20 and $10...some around here have boosters for $7, and you can get 10% off at Waldenbooks with a Prefered Reader card...

That's the only reason I was going to get it! No way I'm paying $35 for it. I'll wait a little bit and look for it on ebay.
