CBT novels appear to be a rather unlikely, currently. Since that prospect depresses me, I've spent a considerable amount of time thinking about a solution.
I think I've got an angle, and since I'm rather impressed with myself and this particular brainfart, I decided to spam you all with it. (hence the crossposts on a couple of boards) I know, my ego is getting the better of me.
Anyway.
What if?
What if TPTB set up a scheme where you'd buy a novel up front? You pay the price for the novel into a fund, which accumalates until it hit's a certain point. At that point, they order a writer to begin writing his novel, and a few months later, you get one in the mail (or some such). After which it hits the stores.
The benefits of that scheme is that they'd basically have a *certain* amount of funds. They don't have to forecast some of their sales; they already know it, and have the money. This seems to reduce the risk involved.
Additional perks of that system is that you might get some additional control. With your pre-payment, you could vote on which writer you'd prefer to do the work.
Heck, why not include an option to select which time period it ought to be set in? I know I'd love to see some prose set in the Star League era. Or right in the middle of the 1st and 2nd Succession Wars. As many have remarked, FanPro's got a pretty broad spectrum to choose from. They can pretty much go all the way back to the 21st century, even.
So, what do you all think?
And perhaps more importantly, how much cash would you fork over for something like this?

Hmmm....interesting idea...provided it works I would probably be willing to throw away...err...spend a little more than what I pay for a brand new paperback these days, say 7 to 8 bucks.

Well the only thing that scares me is their accountability. I can see the fund just never reaching the point to produce a novel, then if everyone is given the options of author and story line I can see that really slowing things down as well.
Dont get me wrong I do like the Idea but I can see a downside to it.
